Baseball America Pegs Gophers Duo as Freshman All-Americans

Another week, another set of honors for Gopher Baseball pitchers Patrick Fredrickson and Max Meyer as Baseball America named each of them to its 2018 Freshman All-America First Team on Wednesday.
The selection marks five such honors for the duo this postseason, with Collegiate Baseball, D1Baseball, NCBWA, and Perfect Game also tabbing Fredrickson and Meyer as Freshman All-Americans. D1Baseball, Collegiate Baseball, and ABCA/Rawlings also chose the pair as overall All-Americans.
Fredrickson received Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA's top honors for rookie hurlers, named each organization's National Freshman Pitcher of the Year after making 19 appearances, including 15 starts, for the Gophers during his rookie campaign. Also the Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, the right-hander posted a 9-0 record and 1.86 ERA while striking out 73 batters in 97.0 innings, ranking 12th in the nation in ERA. Opponents batted just .209 against the native of Gig Harbor, Washington, who also ranked in the top-50 nationally with a 1.01 WHIP and 6.59 hits allowed per nine innings.
Meyer received Collegiate Baseball's Freshman Relief Pitcher of the Year honor earlier this offseason after matching the Minnesota program record with 16 saves in his 26 appearances. The right-hander, who currently has five saves for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer, earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and a spot on the Minneapolis Regional All-Tournament team. He posted a 2-3 record and 2.06 ERA while striking out 54 batters compared to just 13 walks in his 43.2 innings on the season. The native of Woodbury allowed opponents to hit just .163 against him with less than one baserunner per inning with a 0.94 WHIP. Meyer's 16 saves ranked third in the nation.
