Iowa City, IA – 17 Gopher swimmers took part in the 2018 Speedo Sectionals in Iowa City this past weekend. Together the Minnesota swimmers were responsible for 11 medals and set 16 personal bests at the meet.

Sophomore Abbey Erwin had a standout performance in Iowa. The Boise, Idaho native set two personal records and medaled three times at the natatorium on the campus of the University of Iowa. Erwin won gold on consecutive nights in the 800-meter freestyle and 400-meter IM before finishing her meet with a second-place performance in the 1500-meter freestyle.

Three additional Gophers gained multiple medals at the sectional event. Michael Messner took gold in the 800-meter freestyle and silver in the 1500-meter free. Nicki Ciavarella gained pair of second-place finishes competing in the 200-meter and 100-meter breaststroke events. Brenner Hohenstein also medaled in two breaststroke events, taking bronze in the 200-meter and 100-meter distances.

Rounding out the podium finishers in Iowa for the Gophers were Nick Plachinski and Kaela Marcus. Plachinski took the top spot in the 800-meter free, joined by Messner, with a time of 8:19.27. Marcus earned a gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:36.57.
