Gopher Baseball Summer Update: July 25

The Gopher Baseball team is represented across the country this summer with players competing in each of the top collegiate leagues. Follow along with this bi-weekly update to learn about how the Gophers are performing this summer.

Northwoods League
Joshua Culliver (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Culliver continues to work out of the Waterloo bullpen in key spots with three decisions in his last five appearances including a victory on July 2 over Mankato, allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings of work. For the season, he's struck out 15 batters in 22.2 innings and posted a 2-3 record in 17 appearances, all in relief.
Ryan Duffy (Mankato MoonDogs) - Stats
Duffy made just one appearance on the mound for Mankato since the last update, tossing 3.0 shutout innings of relief at Rochester on July 13. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out one. This season, Duffy has a 1-0 record in eight games, striking out eight in 10.0 innings.
Drew Hmielewski (Eau Claire Express) - Stats
Hmielewski has not appeared in a game for the Express since July 9.
Bubba Horton (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Horton made his first start of the season for Fond du Lac earlier this month, working 4.2 innings while allowing just one earned run on two hits. He returned to the bullpen after that with two shutout innings. On the year, he is 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in 18.2 innings spanning nine games, striking out 15.
Danny Kapala (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Kapala continues his sophomore season in the Northwoods League working as a swingman for Waterloo. He drew the loss last time out, allowing two earned on four hits while striking out one in 1.0 inning. He is averaging nearly a strikeout per inning, punching out 27 in 27.2 innings.
Jake Stevenson (St. Cloud Rox) - Stats
Stevenson tossed the first 3.2 innings of a Rox 9-3 victory over Eau Claire last time out, striking out a pair while allowing just one earned. He also tossed 3.0 relief innings against Duluth earlier in the month. This summer, he has a 5.14 ERA in 14.0 innings spanning five games.
Sam Thoresen (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Thoresen picked up a victory last time out, allowing three earned in 5.0 innings while striking out five as Waterloo routed Thunder Bay 17-3. He has now made eight appearances and four starts for the Bucks, striking out 21 in 21.2 innings with a 1-2 record.
Jack Wassel (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Wassel went 3-for-6 with four RBIs to help the Dock Spiders knock off Rockford last week, continuing to be one of the team's most productive hitters. He is now hitting .323 with seven doubles, 13 RBIs, 26 runs scored, and three steals. He has drawn 22 walks compared to 24 strikeouts.
Eli Wilson (Willmar Stingers) - Stats
Wilson entered the League's All-Star break on a five-game hitting streak, going 8-for-16 (.500) in that span with three RBIs and a pair of doubles. He is hitting .345 for the summer, driving in 12 runs and crossing the plate 21 times for Willmar in 23 games.
Cape Cod League
Brett Schulze (Hyannis Harbor Hawks) - Stats
Schulze tossed 4.0 innings of relief on Tuesday night, picking up his first victory of the summer while striking out four in the process. He has also added three saves, including two in his previous three appearances. He has 14 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work spanning 10 games while allowing just 5 walks and 16 hits.
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Easton Bertrand (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Bertrand's hot start cooled, but he remains an efficient hitter for the Stallions this summer. With five home runs and three doubles, he has driven in 12 runs and crossed the plate 15 times in 30 games this summer.
Jacob Hitz (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Hitz finished his time with the Stallions on July 10, being hit by a pitch in a late-inning plate appearance. He concluded the summer with four hits, including a double, in seven games.
Jordan Kozicky (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Kozicky continues his productive season for the Stallions after joining in late June. During his first month, he has batted 21-for-81 (.259) with seven doubles, driving in eight runs and crossing the plate 17 times. He has drawn 14 walks compared to just 10 strikeouts and swiped six bases.
New England Collegiate League
Riley Smith (Upper Valley Night Hawks) - Stats
Smith collected a hit in both ends of a doubleheader on July 10 and driven in four runs over the past two weeks. He now has a double, seven RBIs, and four steals to his name in 24 games this summer.
Expedition League
Gabe Knowles (Badlands Big Sticks) - Stats
The Expedition League All-Star Knowles has been the most productive Gopher at the plate this summer, batting .336, including a 3-for-4 night against Souris Valley last time out. He has five home runs, six doubles, 23 RBIs, and 25 runs scored in 37 games with Badlands.
USA Baseball
Max Meyer (Collegiate National Team) - Stats
Meyer wrapped up his summer stint with the USA Baseball Collegiate Team, collecting seven saves and striking out 15 in eight games and 8.0 innings. The All-American closer competed in International Friendship Series against the Chinese Taipei and Japan in North Carolina and Georgia, and on the road against Cuba in Havana.
