Freshman Spotlight: Abbie Nylin
7/25/2018 4:18:00 PM | Gymnastics
It's that time of year again where fresh faces get acclimated to the Twin Cities campus and Peik Gym. We took time to sit down with each of our new freshmen in this year's spotlight series.Â
Abbie Nylin is a native of Rogers, Minn. She competed for the Twin City Twisters and attended Rogers High School. She is a nine-time JO State championship qualifier, seven-time JO regional qualifier and a five-time JO national qualifier.Â
Nylin racked up seven state titles and twelve regionals titles in her career. She took second place at the 2015 nationals (level 9) with an all-around score of 38.200 and first place in both the 2017 regionals and 2018 regionals (level 10) competitions.Â
Gopher Sports: What brought me to Minnesota was the great atmosphere on the team.Â
Abbie Nylin: Everyone is always so positive and very upbeat. I also love being close to home. I'm having a great time on campus. It's been easy for me to figure out where I am going and I've already met a lot a cool people.Â
GS: You recently went on a three week trip to Europe. What was that experience like?Â
AN: I was nominated to join an All-State Ambassadors Choir which traveled and performed in seven countries over the course of 16 days! We went to London, England, Paris, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Venice, Italy and Germany.Â
It was an amazing experience and I met a lot of new lifelong friends. My favorite country that we went to was definitely Switzerland because of the culture and the mountains. Although Switzerland was my favorite country, I loved singing in all the churches, cathedrals and basilicas. It was an amazing experience and I am so thankful that I got the opportunity to take this trip.Â
GS: What are you most looking forward to in your first school year and season?
AN: I am most looking forward to competing as a Gopher. I've been so excited to come to the U and now it's finally here! I am also looking forward to taking classes for my major.Â
GS: What has it been like to meet your teammates? Who is the funniest teammate so far?
AN: My teammates were super welcoming to me. Since the beginning, I have felt like I have known them my whole life. I've loved getting to know my fellow freshmen as well. I would say Monty (Lexi Montgomery) is pretty funny.Â
GS: What is your favorite gymnastics event?Â
AN: My fav gym event is the floor.Â
GS: Favorite gymnastics memory so far?Â
AN: I have so many amazing gym memories, but one of my favorites would definitely be any time we dressed up at my club gym. Whether that be State week or for holidays, I always got super into it and went all out.Â
GS: What is one thing Gopher fans should know about you?
AN: Something Gopher fans should know about me is I like being called Nylin and I love being outdoors and at the cabin.
