Representing the Maroon and Gold at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Japan this past week were Gopher sophomore Mackenzie Padington and Minnesota alum Kierra Smith.
Padington has made the most of her time on the international stage this summer. Having qualified for this major international meet by winning three events in July at the Canadian Trials, Padington continued to put up fast times at the Pan Pacs.
Padington opened her meet racing in the 800-meter free. In that event Padington placed sixth overall with a time of 8:34.49. The sophomores 800-m finish was four seconds quicker than her first-place finish time at the Canadian Trials and just off the pace of her own personal record of 8:34.42. On day two of the Pan Pacs, Padington anchored the Canadian 4x200-meter freestyle relay to a podium finish. The British Columbia native's split of 1:56.75 helped the team to a 7:47.28 finish.
Padington then swam in the 400-meter free B-Final on her last day of competition in Tokyo, capping her meet with a sixth-place finish in the heat, touching in 4.13:97.
Gopher alum Kierra Smith was active in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events at the Pan Pacs. Smith was on the blocks during the opening day of competition racing in the 100-m breaststroke. Smith took third in the B-Final with a time of 1:08.34. Early Sunday morning Smith finished third in the B-Final of the 200-m breast in a time of 2:26.96, her fourth fastest time of the year.
