ROCHESTER – After a pair of Minnesota Baseball players took home a Summer Collegiate World Series victory last summer, four Gophers representing three teams will seek a summer baseball title in 2018.
Eli Wilson and the Willmar Stingers earned the top seed in the North Division and will host Ryan Duffy and the Mankato Moon Dogs in game one. In the South division, Bubba Horton, Jack Wassel, and the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders will travel to Madison to take on the Mallards. Jake Stevenson and Jackson Rose pitched for the St. Cloud Rox last summer en route to a Northwoods League title.
Duffy tossed a scoreless inning at Eau Claire last Friday to close out his regular season with a 1-1 record and 5.82 ERA in 12 games. He has struck out 17 in 17.0 innings for the MoonDogs, who wrapped the second half at 25-11 to finish 46-26 for the season.
Wilson went 1-for-3 on Saturday, driving in a run and crossing the plate twice at Thunder Bay to wrap up his regular season effort. He's gone 39-for-132 (.295) at the plate with eight doubles and a pair of home runs, 20 RBIs, 31 runs scored, and 15 walks. Willmar edged out Mankato at 26-11 in the second half, finishing with the Division's best record at 48-24 overall.
Horton tossed one inning on Saturday against Madison as the Dock Spiders fell 11-7. He finished the regular season with a 1-1 record and 5.62 ERA in 13 appearances including three starts. He struck out 25 in 32.0 innings. Wassel helped lead the Fond du Lac offense, batting 46-for-145 (.317) on the season with seven doubles, 24 RBIs, 31 runs scored, and 32 walks. Fond du Lac snuck into the final spot in the South Division with a 39-31 overall record, boosted by a strong first half when the team was 21-13.
Both the Fond du Lac at Madison and the Mankato at Willmar match-ups are set to begin at 7:05 p.m. on Monday. The winners advance to a Divisional Championship round game on Tuesday, with the winners of those two games will advance to the three-game Summer Collegiate World Series.
