MINNEAPOLIS – On a wet and slippery night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium it was another freshman with the game winner as Minnesota soccer opened up a seven-match home stand. After allowing an early goal, the Gophers completed a double overtime comeback win over Ole Miss, 2-1. Freshman Megan Gray in the 109th minute picked the perfect time to net her first collegiate goal.
"One of our favorite things about this team is their fight for each other," said Head Coach Stefanie Golan. "We have come from behind twice now and we know we are capable of doing it. Our team has really come together and I thought we did a good job of staying together tonight."
Battling late game fatigue, the Gophers defense hung tough to fend off an Ole Miss corner kick. The Maroon and Gold quickly went the other way as April Bockin found some room on the outside flank. Bockin's shot from 20 yards out hit the right post but the rebound landed perfectly to Gray. Wasting no time Gray sent a quick shot to the back of the net before the Rebel goalkeeper could recover.
Ole Miss struck first in the match generating a goal off a corner kick in the 8th minute.
For the second match in a row the Gophers found themselves trailing at the break, 1-0. Minnesota won the first half shot battle 12-5 with one of those on goal.
Minnesota found the equalizer in the 52nd minute to begin the comeback. Sophomore Makenzie Langdok took a shot that hit the cross bar which then bounced perfectly to sophomore Celina Nummerdor who needed one touch to find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen hung tough between the posts denying Ole Miss on multiple opportunities through the final 20 minutes of regulation to force the overtime period. Nielsen finished the night with six saves.
At end of the 108 minutes Minnesota outshot Ole Miss 21-13, five of which were on goal. The Gophers also added 12 corner kicks to the Rebel's four.
The Gophers look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, August 26 hosting No. 22 Washington State at 1 p.m.
