MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota soccer team fell for the first time this season dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 22 Washington State. The Gophers (3-1) were outshot in the match 10-6 while Washington State (3-0) committed 12 fouls to the Gophers five.
"We had a lot of players play good minutes for us," said Head Coach Stefanie Golan. "We battled today and we had long stretches of really good possession. Our kids kept their heads in a game where they easily could have not and this is going to make us better at the end of the day."
Washington State scored first in the match connecting early in the 6th minute. The Cougars controlled a loose ball from the left side before finding the back of the net from 7 yards out.
The Gophers saw three chances in the opening 45 minutes, but each just narrowly missed the frame.
Trailing at the half 1-0, Minnesota was being outshot by the Cougars 6-3 despite four corner kick opportunities.
Following a cancelled match on Friday, Washington State came out with fresh legs in the second half continuing to test the Gophers defense. The Cougars looked to score again in the 56th minute, but goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen made her lone save of the second half to keep it within one.
Down the stretch Minnesota continued to play a hard counter attack but both looks in the final 20 minutes came up just short.
The Cougars opened up the lead in the 77th minute heading one past Nielsen off a corner kick from the right side.
Minnesota looks to bounce back on Thursday, Aug. 30 as they take on DePaul at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. First touch is set for 6 p.m.
