Gophers Drop Weekend Opener to DePaul, 1-0

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota soccer could not recover from giving up a first half goal Thursday evening against DePaul. The Gophers (3-2) outshot the Blue Demons (3-1) by a narrow 7-6 margin in the 1-0 loss.
"I think DePaul did a good job tonight of making it difficult for us to settle the game and find a rhythm," said Head Coach Stefanie Golan. "It's still very early and we are turning the page to playing the defending national champs, Stanford, on Sunday. We are seeing different challenges in front of us and it's giving us an opportunity to learn and see where we can adjust going into Big Ten play."
Minnesota had opportunities to strike first opening up with four shots in the first 25 minutes. The DePaul defense kept the stalemate in tack before the Blue Demon offense could counter attack.
The Blue Demons scored the match's only goal playing off a quick throw in. Jackie Batliner from 8 yards out headed a ball that was sent in from 38 yards out to break the scoreless affair in the 27th minute.
Minnesota saw just one shot through the remaining parts of the first half. TJ McKendrick fired a shot on goal, but the DePaul defense was able to fend it off as the horn sounded.
The Gophers attempted to find their stride in the second half, but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.
Seeing their best opportunities since the opening minutes, Minnesota saw back-to-back corners between the 70th and 72nd minute. Emily Heslin had the Gophers only look during the span of time.
Minnesota's leading shot taker Celina Nummerdor had the Gophers final look, attempting to head in the game tying goal to no avail in the 87th minute.
Up next, Minnesota welcomes the defending national champions Stanford Cardinals to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. First touch is slated for noon as the match will air live on Big Ten Network.
