Day 1: Arrival
For the men in Maroon & Gold, the arrival to Nevis is one that is long anticipated. With the raising of the Gopher flag, this serves as a symbol for Gopher cross country saying "open for business".
Day 2: Q Loop and the Nevis Cup
To start Friday, the Gophers arrived to run a workout at the northern hillside known as "Q Loop". The men combated the mountainous terrain, for a short tempo effort renowned to bend the will of those who have opposed before.
Following Q Loop, the Gophers enjoyed the rainy part of what would be a beautiful weekend. With the beauty of the Belle Shores, there is much to expect from team camp. Of these expectations, there is continued anticipation for the Nevis Cup.
To start the Nevis Cup, the annual picking of the respective Maroon & Gold teams was in order. On the Maroon team, captain Evan Ferlic selected top picks Alex Plasecnica and Hunter Staack to round out an All-Star quality lineup. On the contrary, Gold team captain Shane Streich selected Owen Hoeft and Alec Basten as questionable top tier athletes to lead the grueling athletic tests the Nevis Cup has to offer.
For the first event of the Nevis Cup, the Maroon team made a large statement claiming a 13-4 victory over the Gold team in Whiffleball. While the Gold team was supported by a late rally led by freshman slugger Khalid Hussein, his two-run homerun was nothing to match the heavy hitting lineup of the Maroon team. Redshirt freshman Seth Elliason hit two homeruns in the game as their lineup had five for the contest. After the game, there was extensive drug testing to make sure the Maroon team was clean. Redshirt freshman Seth Elliason was quoted saying "My name is Seth, and I hit dingers".
Day 3: Nevis Cup and Taco Night
For the third official day at camp, the Gophers drove out to the Paul Bunyan State forest to run along ATV trails. This day was an easier day for the Gophers, given the tempo run forecasted for the following day. With this workload the Gopher men are expecting a tough day of workouts accompanied with rigorous events in the Nevis Cup.
Returning from the run, the Gopher men enjoyed numerous games of ring toss (the most popular game at camp) as well as many other activities. Activities ranged from Monopoly and Dominos to paddle boarding and turtle hunting.
For the Nevis Cup, the Gold team had a difficult day losing two close matchups. Starting the lashing, the Gold team lost a closely contested football game at the Nevis play fields. The Maroon team claimed a 49-35 victory over the long-winded game. Key highlights included the QB battle between Owen Hoeft, Alex Plasencia and their high-flying offenses. A late 2009 Brett Farve Vikings flashback ended the game as the Gold team attempted a late pass to send the game into overtime. As Hoeft rolled to his left, throwing across his body was an underthrown wobbling ball intercepted by Hunter Staack. This sealed the victory and cemented a 2-0 Nevis Cup lead for the Maroon team. Over the course of the contest, all-star golden glove receivers Hunter Lucas and Jordan Macintosh were too much for the Gold team to handle racking up four touchdowns between the tandem.
After a second run for the Gophers, there was the renowned kayak races. The Gophers took to the lake in a relay highlighted by intense paddling and rigorous arm strength. The well-orchestrated, machine-like power of the Maroon team proved too much to handle for the boyish gold team. Most improved kayaking candidate Hamza Ali created a large lead for the men in Maroon, which was extended throughout the entirety of the contest despite a late charge by Joey Duerr.
For the Gold team, major questions have been raised about team captain Shane Streich. His lackluster performances have cost the team greatly and he has faced criticism amongst an evaporating Gold team. Streich responded to such allegations saying, "I think our problem was drafting Connor (Olson) as early as we did. Talk about a draft bust." While the Gold team has coined their team name as "Team Fun", how much fun can win games?
Special note: The night was rounded out with famous Taco night made by Nevis camp MVP, Bunch. Her meals continue to fuel the Gophers through training and fun and are deserving of a cookbook all their own.
