Gophers Sweep Bison in Home Opener

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball program earned a 3-0 win over North Dakota State, tonight, at Maturi Pavilion in front of 4,914 fans. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 3-0 this season, while the Bison drop to 1-3.

The Golden Gophers were led by Stephanie Samedy and Jasmyn Martin, who had double-digit kills with 11 and 10 apiece. Regan Pittman had eight kills in 13 swings to hit .538. Martin followed when she hit .529 (10-1-17), while Adanna Rollins hit .400 (8-2-15). Rollins also led the Gophers with 10 digs. Making their collegiate debut was Lauren Litzau and Alice Zeimann as they each saw action in one set. As a team, the Gophers hit .351, had 46 kills, five aces and 41 digs. NDSU was limited to 23 kills, hit .022 and had 35 digs. Minnesota also held an 8-5 block advantage.

Four matches will be played at Maturi Pavilion tomorrow. Minnesota opens the second day of the Diet Coke Classic when it faces Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. NDSU and Arkansas, who swept Georgia Southern in the first match of the day, play at noon. GSU and NDSU play the 4:30 p,m. match, while Minnesota closes out the tournament against the Razorbacks at 7 p.m.  

Set 1: The Gophers hit .536 and held a perfect 100 percent sideout mark to win the first set, 25-11. Minnesota jumped out to an 11-3 lead off a kill from Pittman. The early run forced North Dakota State to call a timeout. The Gophers later pushed the lead to 15-5 and 20-7 off kills from Samedy. The 20-7 lead caused the Bison burn their second timeout of the set. The Gophers were able to cruise to a 1-0 lead as the Gophers pushed it to 22-7 off a Rollins kill, while Martin finished off the set with a kill.

Set 2: Lauren Barnes pushed the set to 10-6 off an ace, while Martin added a 10-point lead when she had a kill for a 16-6 and again at 17-6. The lead forced NDSU to call a timeout. The Gophers, however, poured on the pressure when they went up, 20-7, off another Martin kill. NDSU rattled off four straight, but the Gophers closed out the set with a 5-1 run to go up, 2-0.

Set 3: Despite NDSU jumping out to an 8-3 lead, Minnesota tied the set at 10-10 off an ace by Seliger-Swenson. The Bison took three point lead at 15-12 off a block, but the Gophers, again tied it up at 15 with a block from Samedy and Morgan. From there, the Gophers took a 19-16 lead as the Bison called its first timeout. NDSU took a timeout as the Gophers pushed it to 23-19, but Minnesota closed out the match with a Pittman block and a Rollins ace for a 3-0 win.
