Gophers Sweep Georgia Southern to Start Day Two of Diet Coke Classic

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep over Georgia Southern in their first game of the day. in the second day of the Diet Coke Classic. The Gophers improve their record to 4-0 on the season while Georgia Southern is now 0-5.
The Maroon and Gold were led by Claire Sheenan who had eight kills, while Jasmyn Martin (.500) and Adanna Rollins each had seven a piece. Kayla Buford saw her first collegiate start during the match and hit a team best .556 with six kills. Samantha Seliger-Swenson put up 22 assists and four kills. Lauren Barnes led the defense with eight digs and CC McGraw followed with six. The Gophers had four aces in the match, three of which came from Rollins. Minnesota hit .451 with 37 kills and 35 digs. The Eagles were held to 29 kills and hit .020 with 24 digs. The Gophers put up 12.5 blocks to Georgia Southern's two.
Minnesota will play in the final game of the tournament against Arkansas at 7 p.m. tonight.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers hit .379 en route to a 25-13 set win. Minnesota opened with a 7-1 run, which caused Georgia Southern to call a timeout. The Gophers pushed the score to 14-6 off a block error by Georgia Southern, as the Eagles burned their second timeout of the set. Minnesota went up double-digits at 17-7 off a Sheehan kill and later 19-8 off a block from Buford/Martin. The Gophers later added another block from Pittman and Martin for set point, and finished off the set with a Pittman kill for a 25-13 set win.
Set 2: Rollins served up an ace for a 10-4 lead as the Eagles called a timeout. Buford later to 15-8, while a triple block of Pittman, Paulina Swider and Rollins added a 19-10 lead as Georgia Southern called another timeout. Another Swider/Pittman block pushed the score to 22-10. The Gophers closed out the set as Georgia Southern committed three errors to take another 25-13 win.
Set 3: A block by Buford and Sheehan added a block at 9-5, which forced the Eagles to call a timeout. Rollins provided three-straight aces to give Minnesota a 13-5 advantage. Rollins went on a 13-point serve run in her rotation. Georgia Southern called another timeout at 14-5 after a Sheehan kill. The Gophers went up 16-5 off another Sheehan kill. Georgia Southern ended the Gopher run off a kill and its sixth point of the set at 19-6. Swider recorded her first collegiate kill at 22-7, while Sara Nielsen added an ace at 23-7. The Gophers finished off the match with a Martin kill at 25-10.
