Padington, Smith Primed to Compete at Pan Pacific Championships

8/6/2018 11:38:00 AM | Women's Swimming & Diving

Mackenzie Padington and Kierra Smith will compete among the world's best this week at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo. The pair qualified for the major international competition by securing their spots on Team Canada at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Edmonton this past July. The meet begins Thursday and is comprised of 18 swimming federations including the United States.

Padington will compete in four events in Japan after an impressive showing at the Canadian Swimming Championships. The sophomore will partake in the three events that she took first-place in in Edmonton, the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1500-meter freestyle events. Padington has also elected to race in the 200-meter free. The British Columbia native set the Minnesota Gopher long course record in the 1500-meter free at the Canadian Trials after swimming a record time of 16:25.38.

Gopher Alum Kierra Smith will accompany Padington at the Pan Pacs. Smith qualified for the international meet after securing two podium finishes in Edmonton. Smith stood above the rest in the 100-meter backstroke and placed second in the 200-meter breast. The 2017 graduate currently holds the Gopher long course records in both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke.

Padington and Smith will mutually take part in the opening and closing days of the competition, swimming on Thursday, August 8th and the following Sunday. Additionally, Padington will swim the 400-meter freestyle event on Saturday.
