Gophers Summer Update (August 8)

The Gopher Baseball team is represented across the country this summer with players competing in each of the top collegiate leagues. As summer leagues start to wrap up, find out how Minnesota represented throughout the nation.

Northwoods League
Joshua Culliver (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Culliver tossed a scoreless inning of relief during the Major League Dreams Showcase on Tuesday night, capping off an impressive two-week stretch in which he has allowed just four hits in 6.1 innings spanning four appearances. After not allowing an earned run in six-straight appearances, he is now 2-4 on the season with a 5.58 ERA in 21 games.
Ryan Duffy (Mankato MoonDogs) - Stats
Duffy has made three appearances out of the bullpen for the MoonDogs over the last couple of weeks, starting with 2.1 scoreless innings against Willmar on July 30, striking out four Stingers. He now has a 1-1 record and 6.18 ERA in 11 appearances for Mankato, striking out 16 in 16 innings.
Drew Hmielewski (Eau Claire Express) - Stats
Hmielewski returned to the line-up for Eau Claire on July 28 and has been steady, collecting seven hits in his last ten games including a four-game hitting streak. His second-inning RBI double helped propel the Express to a 10-9 win over Duluth on August 4. He is now batting .258 for the year in 21 games, with 12 RBIs and eight runs scored.
Bubba Horton (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Horton took a tough-luck loss, allowing just one run without a hit in 3.2 innings of work at Wisconsin on July 26, and then threw matching 4.1-inning appearances his last two appearances. He has struck out 10 batters in 12.1 innings of work over the last two weeks. He now stands at 1-1 with a 5.22 ERA in 12 games including three starts.
Danny Kapala (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Kapala has been busy out of the Bucks bullpen the past few weeks with five appearances, including two scoreless outings of relief work spanning 3.1 innings against La Crosse on August 2 and St. Cloud on August 4. His streak of 13-straight appearances with at least one strikeout ending Monday in 1.1 innings against Thunder Bay. He has now struck out 32 batters in 34.0 innings of work, appearing in 14 games including six starts.
Jake Stevenson (St. Cloud Rox) - Stats
Stevenson has made two starts for the Rox the last two weeks, picking up a victory in each. After going 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits at Thunder Bay, he tossed a summer-long 6.2 innings against Waterloo, striking out 10 while allowing just two runs on four hits. Stevenson now stands 2-0 with a 4.55 ERA in seven games, including three starts.
Sam Thoresen (Waterloo Bucks) - Stats
Thoresen made one start for the Bucks, tossing 6.0 shutout innings while allowing just three hits in a 7-1 win at Bismarck on July 31, striking out one. He is now 2-2 with a 5.20 ERA in nine games, striking out 22 in 27.2 innings of work.
Jack Wassel (Fond du Lac Dock Spiders) - Stats
Wassel continues swinging a hot bat for the Dock Spiders with at least a hit in six of his last eight games including three multi-hit games. He has driven in seven runs over the last two weeks while drawing seven walks compared to just six hits. For the year, he is hitting .311 with 20 RBIs and 29 runs scored in 37 games.
Eli Wilson (Willmar Stingers) - Stats
Wilson went 0-for-2 in the Major League Dreams Showcase earlier this week, but he has been having success for Willmar the last two weeks with three multi-hit games including a home run at La Crosse on August 4. He is now at .317 for the season with eight doubles, 19 RBIs, and 29 runs scored.
Cape Cod League
Brett Schulze (Hyannis Harbor Hawks) - Stats
Schulze helped the Harbor Hawks reach the Cape Cod playoffs, where he tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief against Falmouth as Hyannis fell by a 2-1 final. He wrapped his summer campaign with a 1-3 record in 11 games, including one start, striking out 15 in 19.0 innings of work.
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Easton Bertrand (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Saugerties missed the PGCBL playoffs, but Bertrand finished his campaign with four hits in his final week with the team. He batted .237 with six home runs, 13 RBIs, and 18 runs scored in 34 games for Saugerties this summer.
Jacob Hitz (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Hitz wrapped his season up with Saugerties earlier this season, retiring after a July 10 pinch-hitting appearance where he was hit by a pitch. He went 4-for-21 in seven games, scoring three runs.
Jordan Kozicky (Saugerties Stallions) - Stats
Kozicky closed out his summer with back-to-back big games, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs at Glens Falls before coming back with a 3-for-5 game driving in two runs on a double and a home run at Albany. He wrapped his summer campaign hitting .284 with 10 doubles, 13 RBIs, and 21 runs scored in 26 games.
New England Collegiate League
Riley Smith (Upper Valley Night Hawks) - Stats
Upper Valley missed the NECL postseason, meaning Smith's summer campaign wrapped with a doubleheader on July 31 against Valley. He ripped a double and drove in a run in his final outings, closing out his season with nine RBIs and five runs scored in 28 games.
Expedition League
Gabe Knowles (Badlands Big Sticks) - Stats
The Expedition League All-Star Knowles wrapped up his summer with the Badlands Big Sticks late last month as well, finishing a breakout season where he batted .320 with five home runs, 29 RBIs, and 29 runs scored in 42 games.
