MINNEAPOLIS -- Freshman Lincoln Johnson and sophomore Angus Flanagan shot opening rounds of 65 and 66, respectively, to pace the Gophers men's golf team on the opening day of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The team is currently tied for fifth place at seven strokes under par, while LSU leads the team field at 17-under par. Luis Gagne of LSU leads all players at eight-under.
Johnson started his day with a stellar front nine that included three birdies and an eagle on No. 7 en route to a five-under 30. He dropped one stroke on No. 12, but recovered with a birdie on hole 16 to end the day at 65 and five-under, good for a nine-way tie for third place. It was the lowest round by a Gopher since teammate Thomas Longbella shot a 63 in the second round of the Ka'anapali Classic on Nov. 5, 2016.
Flanagan, last year's Maui Jim leader for Minnesota, was even through the front nine, but had an impressive showing on the back. He shot straight birdies on holes 11-33 to shed three strokes. He gave one of those back with a bogey on hole 15, but battled to birdie on 16 and 17. Flanagan finished just behind Johnson at four-under par and tied for 12th on the leaderboard. His score of 66 was a new personal best for 18 holes.
For Johnson and Flanagan, it's the first time since at least the 2005-06 season that Gopher teammates each shot scores of 66 or better in the same round.
Despite a birdie on No. 5, Longbella was one-over through the front nine and dropped further to two-over after a bogey on 14. He battled back, though, and managed birdies on the final two holes to finish even on the day at 70 and tied for 36th place.
Junior Noah Rasinski and sophomore Evan Long both tied for 56th place at 72, two-over par. Rasinski was at two-over after a birdie on No. 12, but a double bogey on the 13th hole set him back to four-over. He rallied back, however, with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.
Long birdied the seventh hole after consecutive bogeys on holes 2-5 to finish the front nine at two-over par. He put together a stronger back nine that same him shoot even-par and end with a birdie.
For individual competitor and redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin, his opening round was a tale of two nines. After a front nine that saw Minkin eight-over, he bounced back with a three-under 32 on the back. He sits at five-over par in a tie for 73rd after an opening round 75.
The Gophers continue action at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate tomorrow for round two.
