MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Angus Flanagan continued his stellar play Saturday and moved up the leaderboard following the second round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
One day after shooting a career-best round of four-under 66 to tie for 12th place after the opening round, Flanagan moved up to a four-way tie for eighth place with a two-under 68 in round two. His day couldn't have started any better as he eagled his opening hole, No. 10, after holing out from about 150 yards away. He gave back those two strokes with consecutive bogeys on 12-13, but closed out the front nine with a birdie on No. 17. His front nine saw eight pars and a birdie on No. 6 to drop to six-under for the tournament.
Unfortunately for Minnesota, Flanagan was the only golfer to shoot in the red Saturday and the team slipped from a tie for fifth at seven-under par to 13th and two-under after a five-over round of 285. Arizona State and first-round leader LSU are tied atop the team standings at 23-under par, while Arizona State's Chun An Yu has a one-stroke lead at 11-under heading into Sunday's final round.
Gophers freshman Lincoln Johnson, who was tied for third following round one after shooting a 65, fell down the leaderboard into a tie for 33rd after carding a four-over 74 Saturday. He was even on the back nine with a pair of birdies that canceled out a pair of bogeys, but was four-over on the front nine and is now one-under for the tournament.
Junior Thomas Longbella maintained his consistency with a second-straight even-par 70 to tie for 39th place. He was two-over through the first nine holes, but posted birdies on No. 1 and 6-7 before another bogey on the second-to-last hole of the day left him even for the day and the tournament.
Sophomore Evan Long is tied for 64th place at five-over par following a three-over 73 in round two. He was three-over for the front nine, but regained his footing with an even-par 35 on the front nine that saw him post a pair of birdies against two bogeys.
Junior Noah Rasinski's six-over 76 has him at eight-over for the tournament and in a tie for 71st place. He posted a pair of birdies in his round, but also had two bogeys and two triple-bogeys.
Redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin continued to compete as an individual and moved up five spots on the leaderboard to 68th place. After a 75 Friday, Minkin improved with a one-over 71 Saturday. Now six-over for the tournament, he was one-under through the back nine with birdies on 10 and 15, but his round also featured a bogey on 14 and a double on No. 4.
The Golden Gophers will begin the third and final round Sunday going off the back nine. Rasinski will start things off at 9 a.m. CT followed in 10-minute increments by his teammates, while Minkin's individual round begins at 9:50 a.m.
