ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For the second straight match it took more than 90 minutes to decide an outcome for the Minnesota soccer team. This time Minnesota (6-4-1, 2-1-1 Big Ten) came out victorious as senior forward April Bockin scored the golden goal in the 105th minute to defeat Michigan (6-5-0, 2-2-0 Big Ten), 1-0. Senior midfielder Molly Fiedler recorded the game winning assist.
"We had been behind their back line all day, so we tried it and she [Molly Fiedler] found my feet and I buried it," explained Bockin. "Playing on the road in the Big Ten is always a challenge especially for us since we haven't been on the road as much. I think for the young players it was a great experience and to beat Michigan is huge for us."
Throughout the second overtime Minnesota continued to put pressure on the Michigan offensive. Following a turnover by the Wolverines in the midfield Fiedler controlled in the attacking third working her way up before spotting Bockin on the left. Receiving it from Fiedler, Bockin took a touch before scoring the game-winner from inside the penalty box.
Bockin now leads the team in scoring with four goals. With the assist, Fiedler is now one shy of tying Bockin for eighth all-time in program history.
In the first overtime, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen continued her stellar match collecting one of her four saves to keep the Gophers hopes alive. Forcing the opponent to put up another zero on the scoreboard Nielsen has not given up a goal in the last 430:39 of play.
The Gophers put pressure on the Michigan defense early firing off three early shots. The best look of the half resulted from a header by Nikki Albrecht that missed just wide following one of the Gophers three first half corner kicks.
Minnesota's defense continually held strong in the second half allowing one shot on goal. Attempting to break down the Minnesota defense, Michigan took four shots along with two corner kicks.
The Maroon and Gold return home to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium to take on Maryland Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. before hosting Rutgers Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
