MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota soccer recorded their fourth-straight shutout Friday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium defeating Maryland 3-0. The Gophers outshot the Terrapins 18-5 in the contest along with a 7-0 edge in shots on goal.
Both teams locked in defensively in the first half as the Terrapins blocked five shots from Minnesota (7-4-1, 3-1-1 B1G) in the opening 45 minutes. The Gophers broke through against Maryland (3-6-3, 1-3-0 B1G) on a score by Molly Fiedler. The senior netted her second of the season off a feed from Marisa Windingstad at the top of the box after a throw-in from Megan Gray.
Wasting no time Makenzie Langdok extended the Gophers lead two minutes into the second half. Langdok gave a nice touch into the back of the net following a cross from April Bockin in the corner.
The Gophers continued to put the pressure on the Maryland goalkeeper with 11 second half shots. Megan Gray scored the Gophers third goal in the 78th minute after a loose ball was collected by Catherine Billings and then fed to Gray who found the back of the net.
A strong back line consisting of Emily Peterson, Nikki Albrecht, Athena Kuehn, TJ McKendrick Windingstad and Billings allowed no shots on goal during the 90 minute contest and forced Maryland to take only one second half corner kick.
The Maroon & Gold return to ELR on Sunday as they host Rutgers (6-1-3, 2-0-1 B1G) to wrap up the weekend homestand.
