Gophers Fall to Rutgers in Double Overtime, 2-1

9/30/2018 4:13:00 PM | Soccer

MINNEAPOLIS – Early afternoon rain did not deter Minnesota soccer as they battled it out in Big Ten play against Rutgers at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. For the third time in four matches the Gophers needed more than 90 minutes to decide an outcome falling to the Scarlet Knights in double overtime, 2-1.

An early penalty kick put Rutgers (7-1-4, 3-0-2 Big Ten) on the board in the 13th minute. Minnesota (7-5-1, 3-2-1 Big Ten) showed no panic on the attack producing four first half corners.

In the 40th minute the Gophers capitalized on a corner kick as senior midfielder Emily Heslin scored her first goal of the season. McKenna Buisman placed a perfect ball from the far corner that went off a Scarlet Knight's head and right to Heslin who netted the equalizer.

The Gophers offense came out hot in the second half attempting five shots, two of which were on goal, to Rutgers one. April Bockin had the Gophers final two looks near the end of regulation, but the Rutgers goalkeeper hung tough between the posts.

Both teams led a heavy offensive charge during the first overtime. A late foul on Rutgers brought a series of corner kicks, but the ball never found the back of the net.

In the second overtime, Marisa Windingstad fired off a shot on goal before Rutgers had a chance at an offensive attack. Maddie Nielsen came up with a big save before Rutgers found the game-winner in the 105th minute on a strike from just outside the box.

The Maroon and Gold hit the road as they continue Big Ten competition at Purdue on Oct. 5 before traveling to Indiana on Oct. 7.
