LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A high paced second half led Minnesota to a road victory Friday evening defeating Purdue at Folk Stadium, 2-1. Scoring her first collegiate game-winning goal was sophomore Celina Nummerdor in the 70th minute with Molly Fiedler and Nikki Albrecht adding assists.
The Gophers (8-5-1, 4-2-1 Big Ten) outshot the host Boilermakers (6-4-2, 1-3-2 Big Ten) 9-6 while also producing seven corner kick opportunities to Purdue's three.
The Gophers took full advantage of that high paced second half tempo down the stretch. In the 70th minute while still in search of the Gophers first shot of the second half, Albrecht sent a ball up to the attacking third. Controlling just inside the end line, Fiedler sent a cross through three Purdue defenders to Nummerdor whose right foot shot found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Both teams started out with a slow pace before Minnesota broke the scoreless battle. In the 26th minute, Maddie Nielsen sent a kick away to midfield that was headed by a Purdue player into the Gophers attacking third. Using her quick speed, Bockin quickly went to battle with a Purdue defender who fell to the ground creating a loose ball inside the box. Bockin gained control of the ball where her shot from 15 yards out found its way between the posts.
Purdue scored their only goal of the night in the 51st minute connecting on a corner kick from the far side.
The Gophers now travel to Bloomington, Ind. where they take on Indiana Sunday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. CT.
