The University of Minnesota women's tennis team concluded its annual Gopher Invitational tournament on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Baseline Tennis Center. The Golden Gophers posted an impressive mixed record of 45-14 while notching a 25-7 doubles record and 20-7 singles mark across the four days.
In Sunday's doubles draws the Gophers would have their most impressive two-round score of the week with a perfect 8-0 start before beginning singles. Most notably, the Gophers' Annemarie Emme was the only player to post an 8-0 record in doubles competition throughout the weekend despite the rotating pairings.
"I knew I was going to play with someone different everyday, so I was playing everything off of instincts and molding myself around whoever I was playing with and their game style," Emme said. "In doubles you can't think too much because it goes by really fast so I just tried to get to the net because that is my favorite thing to do."
During Sunday's singles match-ups, the Gophers posted a 5-4 record after tough losses against Iowa State and three Nebraska opponents. The Gophers bounced back with five wins from Tina Kreinis, Juliet Zhang, Emme, Camila Gomez and Bella Lambert. With Emme's singles victory she would remain undefeated on the day and post a perfect mixed record of 11-0 for the entirety of the tournament. Additionally, there were three Gophers who recorded 3-0 records in singles competition throughout the Gopher Invitational: Emme, Kreinis and Zhang.
"The last day of the tournament everyone is giving it everything they have and I just wanted to fight for it," Kreinis said. "We are getting better as a team on doing the basics and even if we don't feel like we are playing our best, we can fall back on our fundamentals, which is helping us win more games and win more matches."
This year's Gopher Invitational marks one of the best starts the Gophers have had at their home tournament despite being four months removed from competition after their first match was cancelled due to the impending Hurricane Florence.
The Gophers will wait and see if they will have any qualifiers for the All-American Championships taking place in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Sept. 29 through Oct. 7. From there, the Maroon and Gold will travel across the border to Iowa City, Iowa for the ITA Central Regionals, beginning Oct. 12. The Gophers will not be back on their home court until Feb. 2 when they host the Courtside Classic tournament as Colorado, Montana and DePaul visit Baseline Tennis Center. Â
