MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota men's golf team finished its first day on the famous Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis., with junior Thomas Longbella and sophomore Evan Long leading the team, while senior Peter Jones cracked the top 15 as an individual competitor.

The Gophers tallied an opening round score of 302, 14-over par, and currently sit in ninth place after one round of the Marquette Intercollegiate. Fellow Big Ten competitor Northwestern tops the team leaderboard with a first round score of 286, two-under par, while Gonzalo Leal of Iowa is in first with a five-under par 67.

Longbella, who placed second among Minnesota's team contingent last weekend, carded two birdies in the first round and sat at one-over par through 14 holes. He dropped two additional strokes over the final four holes, however, to finish with a three-over par 75, good for a share of 35th place.

Like Longbella, Long also finds himself tied for 35th place. Long set himself up with a good start as he birdied his first hole of the day, but then went on to card 13 pars and a pair of bogeys on both the front and back nine to finish three-over par.

Sophomore Angus Flanagan, who led the Gophers at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate last weekend, recorded a par on the first seven holes but finished the front nine with a bogey and double bogey. He maintained composure and was even on all but one hole on the back nine, and finished with a four-over 76.

Flanagan shares his tie for 47th with Minnesota's final two team competitors, junior Noah Rasinski and freshman Lincoln Johnson.

Rasinski was four-over par after his first nine holes of the day, and despite one birdie, he added another stroke by Hole 13. He then battled back and gave himself a boost with an eagle on No. 14, and scored all but one par on the next four to finish at four-over with a 76.

Johnson had a whirlwind front nine that featured three birdies, three bogeys and one double that put him up two strokes over par. He carded two bogeys early on the back, a birdie, and another bogey on the final hole of the day to finish with a 76.

Minnesota's individuals had an especially good day, with Jones leading all Gophers in a tie for 11th with an even 72. Jones, who is competing in his second tournament of the season, tallied three birdies that helped him finish one-under par on the front nine. He shot a bogey and a double early on the back nine, but countered them with birdies on the following holes each time.

Freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington had an impressive start to his second collegiate outing. He carded Minnesota's second eagle of the day on the same hole as Rasinski, No. 14, and put himself ahead early. He added four bogeys on the next nine holes, but settled in to finish with four pars and a score of 74, two-over par and tied for 30th. He shaved five strokes off his best round at the Gopher Invitational to set a new personal best.

Redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin rounded out the Gophers' individual competition. Two birdies helped to put him at one-under par through his first seven holes, but he finished the front nine at one-over. He countered with a birdie on No. 10, added a double bogey on No. 13, and finished the round with a 75, three-over par and in a tie for 35th with Longbella and Long.

The Gophers continue action at Erin Hills tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m.
