Minnesota improved to 20-2-1 with a 5-1 win on the road at Minnesota State Friday night.
MANKATO, Minn. -- Five different Gophers scored goals as the No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team won its 20th game of the season with a 5-1 win on the road at Minnesota State on Friday night.
Minnesota (20-2-1, 10-2-1-0 WCHA) received goals from Patti Marshall, Emily Oden, Amy Potomak, Taylor Wente, and Olivia Knowles and multiple points from Taylor Heise (2a) and Oden (1g-1a) as the Maroon & Gold extended its winning streak to 13 games. Alex Gulstene made 18 saves as the Gophers outshot the Mavericks, 33-19.
Minnesota State (8-9-4, 3-8-2-1 WCHA) got 28 saves from Abigail Levy, and Brooke Bryant scored the Mavericks' lone goal.
"It was a real solid win here tonight against a good team and a very good goaltender," head coach Brad Frost said. "I thought, for probably 58 minutes, we played extremely well. When they got their goal, they made a little push there but we were able to stem the tide. I'm really happy with the pressure we were able to apply and the back pressure coming back to our net."
The Gophers took a 2-0 lead after the opening period on goals from Marshall and Oden and extended the lead to three on a power-play goal from Potomak in the second period. Wente put Minnesota up by four just 10 seconds into the final stanza before the Mavericks cut the Gophers lead back to three with 12:29 remaining but Knowles scored her fourth of the year with 1:49 to go for the 5-1 victory.
"They blocked maybe more shots than any team that we've played so far this year," Frost said. "When you do get shots through, good things happen. You look at Patti's goal and Olivia's goal from the point. There's so much traffic in front that if it does get through, it's got a chance because their goaltender can't see it. We applied a lot of pressure offensively and were able to generate some things off rebounds and some tips."
Minnesota was a perfect four-for-four on the penalty kill while scoring one power-play goal on four opportunities with the skater advantage. Â
The Gophers and Mavericks wrap up this weekend's WCHA series at 3:07 p.m. CT Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn.
