Gophers Prove to be the Best of Minnesota

1/12/2019 8:26:00 PM | Gymnastics

After four rotations of competition, the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team tallied a final team score of 195.600 to take first place at the 2019 Best of Minnesota meet. The Gophers posted the top six scores on every apparatus, and showed the team's depth when four different gymnasts took home first-place event finishes.

The annual Best of Minnesota competition features Hamline, Gustavus, and Winona State, and this year's meet saw just under 3,000 fans pack into Maturi Pavilion to cheer on these local teams.

Lexy Ramler won the all-around competition with a score of 39.475. She posted a 9.800 on vault, a 9.900 on bars, a 9.925 on beam and 9.850 on floor exercise. Her scores were strong enough to claim first place on both the beam and floor events.

Ivy Lu brought the crowd to its feet with her event-winning performance on the uneven bars. Her score of 9.925 along with Ramler's 9.925 on beam were the highest scores of the meet for any team.

Vault

Freshmen Tiarre Sales and Ali Sonier kicked off the meet on vault for the Gophers, who wound up scoring a 48.800 for the rotation. Their scores of 9.675 tied for fourth on the team. Ramler came in third for Minnesota with a 9.800 while Paige Williams and Ona Loper tied for first on vault with their scores of 9.825. Both gymnasts shared the event win as well.

Bars

It was a great night on bars for the Gophers as three different gymnasts finished with stuck landings and all six routines scored above a 9.700. Lu's 9.925 and Ramler's 9.900 took first and second for the team, but Kristen Quaglia also brought in a big score of 9.800 for the Gophers. Casey Betts had the fourth-highest score of the night with a 9.775, and Lexi Montgomery and Sales both scored a 9.725 in the event. Minnesota finished with a team score of 49.125, their best event score of the night.

Beam

After struggling on beam the week prior the Gophers returned to the event with a vengeance. All six gymnasts hit their routines and the team put up a total of 48.950, the second-best of the night. Ramler led Minnesota on beam with a 9.925. Sales finished second with an impressive 9.825, her highest so far this season. Loper, Sonier and Rachel Cutler round out the top five with their respective scores of 9.750, 9.725 and 9.725.

Floor

The team ended the night on floor exercise and posted an event score of 48.725. Ramler won the event after tallying a 9.850, and Williams took second with her score of 9.775. Culter danced and tumbled her way to a 9.725 and finished third for the Gophers. Loper and Sonier round out the top five with their scores of 9.700 and 9.675.

The team will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 19 as they travel to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes in their first Big Ten matchup of 2019.
