1/15/2019 11:50:00 AM | Wrestling
Gopher wrestling heavyweight Gable Steveson made his debut at No.1 in the Intermat, FloWrestling, and Trackwrestling rankings after his defeat of Iowa's Connor Corbin gave him a 20-0 undefeated record to begin his college career.
With 20 straight victories Steveson is tied or the 26th longest winning streak in Gophers history. With one more victory he will tie two members of the coaching staff, head coach Brandon Eggum and volunteer assistant coach Zach Sanders. Eggum was a sophomore and Sanders was a senior during their streaks while Steveson is only a true freshman.
Steveson began his 20-0 start by winning two Open Tournament titles at the Daktronics Open and the Bison Open. After his redshirt was removed prior to the Gophers dual with No.2 Oklahoma State on Nov. 18, 2018 Steveson has gone 8-0 in duals.
During his home debut against Oklahoma State Steveson defeated then-No.3 Derek White.
Steveson won the championship at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with victories over three ranked wrestlers on his way to the title.
Of his 20 victories, 11 have come via bonus point victories including three pins. He has five wins over Big Ten foes.
The Apple Valley, Minnesota, native was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 19, 2018 and named USA Wrestling Wrestler of the Week on December 3, 2018.
Steveson's prep record was 210-3 and he was a four-time Minnesota state champion. He is also a two-time Cadet World Champion as well as a Junior World Champion. He took fourth place at 125kg at the Marion Corps US Open this past summer.
The last Gopher ranked No.1 was 133-pound Chris Dardanes during the 2014-15 season who began his senior year 26-0.
