Opponent Outlook: Midweek in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS – The defending Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Champion Gopher Baseball team returns next spring after an historic season in 2018, looking to build on the success of an NCAA Super Regional run.
The path will not be easy with the team's home slate at U.S. Bank Stadium eliminated for the season and six NCAA Tournament teams on the docket in non-conference along with the tough 24-game B1G schedule. Minnesota welcomes four teams to Siebert Field this spring for midweek non-conference games. Today, we will examine the Gophers' six regional rivalry games against North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Milwaukee, and Omaha.

North Dakota State finished 26-24 last season and 15-13 in the Summit League before bowing out in the conference's postseason tournament … head coach Tod Brown returns for his 12th season and retains former Gopher Tyler Oakes on his coaching staff in 2019 … NDSU ranked in the top 10 nationally with its seven team shutouts in 2018 and no. 28 with 18 triples as a team … junior right-hander Riley Johnson returns to anchor the pitching staff after making 15 starts last season to the tune of a 4.57 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 86.2 innings … junior infielder Tucker Rohde brings the top returning offensive performance from last season, batting .269 with five doubles, 12 RBIs, and 22 runs scored … senior outfielder Jayce McLean launched seven home runs last season to lead the Bison … Minnesota defeated NDSU 3-1 on Feb. 27, 2018 to extend its lead in the all-time series to 34-9.

South Dakota State finished 18-32 last season, but went 14-13 in the Summit League before falling in the conference tournament's title game to conclude 2018 … head coach Rob Bishop returns for his third season leading the Jackrabbits … SDSU ranked no. 50 in the nation by drawing 268 walks last season …
junior right-hander Brady Moxham returns to the rotation after making 16 starts last year, striking out 68 in 73.0 innings despite going 1-6 with a 5.55 ERA … sophomore infielder Gus Stieger returns after a break-out rookie campaign where he hit .311 in 48 games, driving in 27 RBIs and scoring 28 times … the Gophers defeated the Jackrabbits 1-0 last season on Feb. 28, 2018 to move to 33-12 in the all-time series.

Milwaukee closed out the 2018 campaign at 26-28 but finished 13-12 in the Horizon League, falling in the conference tournament … head coach Scott Doffek enters his 13th season with the Panthers in 2019 … Milwaukee ranked no. 52 while turning 49 double plays last season and also in the top 50 in stolen bases per game with 74 on the year … senior outfielder Devin Rybacki returns after leading the offense with a .336 batting average in 2018, while junior infielder Trevor Schwecke returns having led the Panthers with 39 RBIs and 43 runs scored while batting .318 … senior right-hander Jared Reklaitis returns to the rotation after finishing 4-4 with a 4.87 ERA in 11 starts, striking out 67 in 61.0 innings … Minnesota edge Milwaukee 5-4 on March 7, 2018 to move to 11-5 all-time against the Panthers

Omaha wrapped up 2018 with a 15-35 overall mark while missing the postseason after finishing 10-17 in the Summit League … head coach Evan Porter returns for his third season leading the Mavericks … Omaha played its share of small ball, ranking no. 29 in the nation with its 45 sacrifice bunts last season but ranked in the bottom 10 percent of the nation in batting average, doubles, and home runs … senior infielder Braden Rogers returns after leading the offense with a .280 batting average, while Thomas DeBonville lifted six of the team's 15 home runs … sophomore Joey Machado made 14 starts with a 4.35 ERA, striking out 50 in 82.2 innings … the Gophers' 5-3 win on March 6, 2018 extended its lead in the all-time series to 4-1.
