Gophers Post Record Scores in Win over Penn State

1/26/2019 6:59:00 PM | Gymnastics

The Gophers were victorious in tonight's dual meet against Penn State as they posted a final team score of 196.925 to narrowly defeat the Nittany Lions, who finished the meet with a final team score of 196.775. Minnesota remains undefeated in Big Ten competition and improves to an overall record of 6-2 on the season.

Minnesota lead for all four rotations, but Penn State kept the meet close throughout the entire competition by never being more than .300 behind the lead. The Gophers responded to this challenge by scoring 49.000 or higher on vault, bars and beam, posting season-highs on all three events. Tonight's squad even wrote themselves into the history books as they recorded the fourth-highest team event score in program history on the balance beam.

"The team was just amazing tonight," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We had so many great performances all though the meet, on every event. We had to make some last minute adjustments to line-ups and the team responded. We are so proud of them for their persistence tonight and their growth each and every week. "

Lexy Ramler also goes down in program history tonight thanks to her 39.625 title-winning score in the all-around competition. Not only is 39.625 her career-best all-around score, but it is also tied for the fifth-best score in program history, making Ramler as the only gymnast other than Lindsay Mable (2013-16) to ever achieve a score that high.

Paige Williams and Ivy Lu both added onto the joy of the night as each had a routine receive a score of 9.950. Williams earned her 9.950 on floor exercise with her inventive choreography and powerful tumbling. This score ties the personal best she set in 2018.

Lu posted her 9.950 on the uneven bars where her graceful lines and stuck double-layout dismount have made her a powerhouse. Ramler contributed her own 9.950 on beam to give Minnesota a total of three different gymnasts scoring a 9.950 at tonight's competition.

Vault

Ramler claimed the event win on vault with her score of 9.900. Ali Sonier (9.875), Tiarre Sales (9.850) and Kristen Quaglia (9.825) all recorded career-high scores at tonight's meet and placed 3-4-5 in the event. Williams earned a 9.800 for her Yurchenko full to give the Gophers a team vault score of 49.250, which is their best so far this season.

Bars

The Gophers began the meet on the uneven bars, an apparatus on which they were ranked No. 9 in the NCAA heading into this meet. The gymnasts showed why they are so strong on this apparatus as they put up a team event score of 49.325, their best in 2019.

Lu set the bar high for the rest of the competition with her 9.950, a season-best so far for the Montreal native. Her 9.950 was enough to earn Lu the uneven bars title for the fourth consecutive meet. Ramler notched a 9.875, the second-highest score for Minnesota. Ona Loper and Sales posted a pair of 9.850s and Quaglia recorded a 9.800 to round out the top five Minnesota scores.

Beam

The Gophers were outstanding on beam tonight as the gymnasts combined to earn a 49.375, the fourth-highest beam event score in program history. For the second week in a row, Ramler's beam routine scored a 9.950. This score was good enough for her to claim the event win once again.

In her first time back in the beam lineup this season, Lu notched a 9.900 and tied for second place overall in the event. Sonier brought in the third-highest score for the Gophers with a personal-best 9.875. Loper added a 9.850 and Sales scored a 9.800 to finish out the historic rotation for Minnesota.

Floor

Williams earned herself the event win on floor exercise after scoring a 9.950 on her routine. Ramler came in second for Minnesota and second in the event with her score of 9.900. Loper posted a 9.850 for her routine, and Sonier and Lexi Mongomery rounded out the top five for the Gophers with their respective scores of 9.675 and 9.600. Minnesota concluded the event with a team score of 48.975.
