Director of track & field Matt Bingle breaks down the Gophers’ sprints, hurdles, jumps, and relays for 2019.
MINNEAPOLIS – Director of track & field Matt Bingle and assistant coach Zach Siegmeier break down the Gophers' sprints, hurdles, pole vault, jumps, and relays for 2019, looking at the women's team key returners and newcomers heading into the indoor track & field season along with looking ahead to the outdoor season.
"My big goal for the whole team this year is really just to get better, both short term and long term," Bingle said. "We want to improve both on and off the track. Sometimes the on the track stuff is easier to improve than off the track, but ultimately we want them all to become more complete student-athletes this year. That should be our focal point.
"This year the idea is that the coaches and the athletes have to do a really good job of being change-makers. This is a super important year, and everybody has to buy in to getting better. I'm going to be relentless on that every day."
With nearly the entire sprints, hurdles, and multis group returning for the 2020 season, the Gophers will rely on young leaders this season. Val Larson and Rachel Schow return as two of Minnesota's most experienced athletes in the sprints and hurdles while Sophia Anderson will also lead the way as one of the team's lone seniors. A talented freshmen class will look to gain experience at the collegiate level as well.
"Our freshman class that we're mostly redshirting this year has a ton of potential," Bingle said. "I'm super excited about them. They have a huge role and a lot of potential. We're excited to get them some experience this year and then see them contributing in uniform next year."
Sprints and Relays
Key Returners: Val Larson, Sophia Anderson, Allison Dugan
Key Newcomers: Amira Young, Lexi Romero
Bingle: Val Larson had an unbelievable fall. She's better; she took a big step outdoor last season, growing emotionally and competing at a very high level, qualifying for nationals and those things. That was a big step for her. Sophia Anderson is back as one of our senior leaders in the sprints group, and she has had a good fall, too. Amira Young will help us in the short sprints and the 4x400m relay; physically, she's very good. She has some big league potential. We're excited to see what she can do once she gets in uniform at some meets, but she certainly has a bright future.
Hurdles
Key Returner: Rachel Schow
Bingle: Rachel Schow has the potential to keep taking another step, and I'm excited about that. She grew a lot outdoors last season, and hopefully that can lead her into taking the next step this year. She could have an awesome year in the 400m hurdles. There's no reason why she shouldn't break our program record in that event eventually.
Multi-Events
Key Returners: Ashley Ramacher, Hannah Arason
Key Newcomers: Monique Felix, Allison Gerads
Bingle: The multis definitely have the potential to make a push this year with the addition of Monique Felix and then Hannah Arason, Ashley Ramacher, and Allison Gerads coming back. Ayesha Champagnie is going to redshirt, but this group has a lot of potential to be great. We're excited about having Monique join the team after a great career at Marquette. Allison learned a lot as a redshirt last year, and I'm excited to see her in uniform. She's a big part of the future for that group.
Pole Vault
Key Returners: Lexi Kiefer, Karlie Place
Siegmeier: The fall that we had was really good. It was my first chance getting to work with Karlie and Lex. It was fun getting to learn how they tick. The needs of each person are a little bit different, but it's been fun. There has been a lot of really good work put in, and I'm excited to see how they do coming up. Karlie is fast. She has a really good feel for the pole vault. She has a really pretty vault, so it's fun to watch. Lexi is just a really tough athlete and is a good pole vaulter. She has improved so much on sprint mechanics and with her approach on the runway, so that transition has been fun to watch. She had a phenomenal spring last year and a really good outdoor Big Ten meet, so she's really excited to see what she can do this year and build off that – and I am, too. Karlie will compete unattached indoors, and then we'll look for her to have a really good outdoor season. My focus for her is for the outdoor season, performing really well at the Big Ten meet and then trying to make the outdoor NCAA meet. I think that would be a great way for her to cap off her college career.
Jumps
Key Returners: Ashley Ramacher, Hannah Arason, Lorean Murray
Key Newcomer: Hannah Morris
Bingle: In the high jump, Ashley Ramacher and Hannah Arason return for us. Ashley is just super talented, and she's been dialed in these last six weeks. Hannah will also compete in high jump again along with helping us in the multis. In the horizontal jumps, Lorean Murray had a really good fall. She's somebody who has continued to develop and has taken another step. We're excited about her potential; she just has to be able to execute and continue to grow as a competitor. Hannah Morris is super talented, and she will help us in the long jump. She's another person who has a ton of potential. She's a great teammate with a great spirit.
