Gophers Rally for Win in Series Finale

10/12/2019 11:16:00 PM | Men's Hockey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Minnesota men's hockey program picked up its first win of the 2019-20 campaign with a 4-3 win over Colorado College on Saturday night at the Broadmoor World Arena, earning a series split with the Maroon & Gold's former conference rival.

Minnesota (1-1-0 overall, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) rallied from a two-goal deficit in the first period on Saturday night with goals from Sampo Ranta, Sammy Walker, Matt Staudacher and Blake McLaughlin. Walker led the game with two points, adding an assist to his goal.

Staudacher's first career goal (he tallied his first career point with an assist on Friday) proved timely as the freshman defenseman notched the equalizer late in the second period before McLaughlin's notched the game winner with a one timer midway through the third period.

Jared Moe picked up the win in his Gophers debut, making 27 saves.  The Maroon & Gold outshot Colorado College 36-30 in the win while going 2-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill including a five-minute major in the third period.

Notable
Eleven Gophers tallied points in the win including nine of Minnesota's 12 forwards.

Quotable
"Good weekend for our hockey team. We saw a little bit of everything, but overall I liked the way we played all weekend," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We found some offense, and that's what we needed to do."

Up Next: Series Home Opener vs. Niagara
The Gophers will host Niagara for a two-game, non-conference series next weekend (Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19) to kick off the 2019-20 home schedule. Both games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT puck drops on FOX Sports North with radio broadcasts on 1130 KTLK-AM and 103.5 FM and streams on FOX Sports Go.

All tickets for the 2019-20 Gopher Hockey season – the 99th campaign in program history – are now on sale through GopherSports.com. Season tickets start at $500 – the lowest price point for season tickets at the University of Minnesota since 1999-2000. Highlighting the 2019-20 slate is one of the strongest home schedules in program history with Minnesota hosting all six Big Ten opponents (Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin) along with nonconference foes in North Dakota, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State, Bemidji State, St. Cloud State and Niagara.
