The Minnesota men's golf team welcomes two newcomers to the team for the 2019-20 season. GopherSports.com will sit down with each of them to get to know them better as they compete in their first season in the Maroon and Gold.

Our second and final newcomer this year is Connor Glynn. Glynn hails from Waconia, Minn., and helped Waconia High School to its first Minnesota State High School League section championship after taking first place with a 140. He has maintained a top-10 state ranking for his class for the last two years, climbing as high as second last season. A four-year captain, Glynn tied for 11th at the state tournament as a sophomore and tied for 20th as a junior. Glynn also tied the Minnesota state record by carding a nine-under 63 at a conference meet this past May and won the 2018 Oakdale Invitational. After competing for five years, Glynn earned his first AJGA Champion title in July at the WinCraft/McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends Tournament.

Gophersports.com: How long have you been playing golf?
Connor Glynn: "Since I was six (years old)."

GS: Who introduced you to golf?
CG: "Originally it was my dad, then one of my good friends from back home asked me to play one day in sixth grade. We got a new head coach for our high school team that year who told us we'd be allowed to try out. We just kept playing and ended up making the high school team in seventh grade."

GS: When did you realize you realize you'd like to play collegiate golf?
CG: "I would say toward the end of my freshman year of high school. I saw Coach Matt (Rachey) play in college and I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to play at that level, as well." [e.d. note: Coach Rachey hails from Connor's hometown of Waconia, Minn]

GS: What drew you to play for Minnesota?
CG: "It was always my dream to play here, and I really like Coach (Justin) Smith. I decided I wanted to play for him."

GS: Having grown up in Minnesota, what does it feel like to rep the Maroon and Gold?
CG: "It feels like a dream. You grow up watching the basketball team, football team -- golf's unfortunately not on TV so you don't get to watch that -- but to be considered an athlete with those people is a really cool feeling."

GS: Have you noticed any differences between playing at the high school level and collegiate level?
CG: "The courses are a lot harder and longer. I'd say it requires more patience because the pace of play is a lot slower in college so it's longer days. You have to enjoy it rather than expect to be done with one round in four hours. You just have to be patient and enjoy it."

GS: Has the slower place-of-play caused an adjustment in your routine?
CG: "I don't try to make my routine anything longer, so I just try to keep myself busy in between shots by talking to other players and other things."

GS: How was your experience competing in your first few collegiate tournaments?
CG: "It's been really good. It's really humbling playing on a team with a lot of really good players. The cool part about these collegiate tournaments is knowing that it is 54 holes. It's not as stressful to try to make a certain amount of birdies. Since there are 54 holes you just have to be patient; good things will come if you just trust yourself."

GS: What would you say is the strongest part of your game?
CG: "It's definitely not how far I hit it. I feel like my mental aspect, not getting too far ahead of myself, is one of the stronger points of my game. I'm much stronger in the mental aspect as opposed to the physical aspect."

GS: What is one thing you'd like to improve upon?
CG: "My lag putting is quite, quite poor at the moment. I'd like to be a bit more aggressive out on the course, as well."

GS: How has the adjustment been like coming into college?
CG: "It's been alright. I had to get used to the long walks to class and making sure I get there on time. It's been good though, a lot of fun. The upperclassmen have been really good at helping us out, so that's been nice."

GS: Is there anything you hope to achieve while playing for the Gophers?
CG: "I would say playing really nice golf courses, meeting a lot of new people and getting new connections."

GS: Is there anything you're looking forward to doing in college?
CG: "I don't really have a set expectation of what I would like to do except enjoy it. That would be the most important thing to me."
