MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Angus Flanagan posted his ninth straight round under par and the Minnesota men's golf team is in fifth place after Sunday's opening round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.
Facing a field that includes six teams that are ranked in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll and five more that are receiving votes, Minnesota shot an even-par 288 Sunday at Isleworth Golf and Country Club. That puts the Golden Gophers one shot back of Cal and LSU, two shots behind Florida (-3) and three shots back of UCF (-8). All six ranked teams currently trail Minnesota on the leaderboard.
Leading the way for Minnesota was Flanagan, who is tied for seventh after a 2-under 70. He birdied two of the first three holes to quickly move to 2-under. He bogeyed No. 6 but followed with a birdie on the next hole and then posted 11 straight pars to finish with his team-best 10th round under par this year.
Flanagan is three shots behind co-leaders Finigan Tilly of Cal and Jack Trent of UNLV. Both golfers carded round 67 to put them 5-under through the opening round.
Freshman Connor Glynn posted his sixth round under par this season as he carded a 1-under 71. A birdie and bogey had him at even-par through eight holes but he scored a three on the par-4 ninth to make the turn at 1-under. A bogey on No. 10 brought him back to even again, but a birdie on No. 13 held up through the end of the round to leave him in a tie for 12th.
After playing five rounds as an individual this fall, sophomore Will Grevlos had his best round to par and matched a season low for 18 holes as he shot a 1-over 73. After making the turn at 2-over, Grevlos used a birdie on No. 13 to play the back nine at 1-under and finish the day tied for 29th.
Sophomore Lincoln Johnson was one shot back of Grevlos with a 74 after posting a 37 on both the front and back nine. He had two birdies on the day to end in a tie for 37th.
Like Grevlos, fellow sophomore Harry Plowman-Ollington also made his team debut after five rounds as an individual this fall. He had three birdies but ultimately carded a 42-40 for an 82 to enter round two in 74th place.
