MINNEAPOLIS – In the final tournament of the fall slate, junior Angus Flanagan posted his third straight top-10 finish as play concluded at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.
Competing at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club, Flanagan shot a 3-under 72 Tuesday to finish four strokes under par (212) and in a tie for seventh place. In his previous two tournaments he finished first and second, respectively, at the Macdonald Cup and Jerry Pate Intercollegiate. That makes him the first Golden Gopher to earn three straight top-10 finishes since Jose Mendez did it over the final five tournaments in the spring of 2014 and first two tournaments later that fall.
Flanagan climbed 10 spots from his second round finish as he tallied three birdies and 15 pars in the third round. Those birdies came on holes 17 and 18 and again on No. 9 to close out his round. He's now gone under par in 10 of his last 11 rounds.
The medalist was UCF's Johnny Travale, who won at 12-under with a 204. That was followed by LSU's Trey Winstead (-11) and two golfers tide at 7-under.
As a team, Minnesota finished in a tie for 11th with Big Ten counterpart Illinois at 17-over. Tournament co-host UCF (-20) won the team title with LSU (-6) and Vanderbilt (-1) following.
Sophomore Lincoln Johnson had his best round of the tournament with a 1-under 71 Tuesday. That gave him a 54-hole total of 223, good for 7-over and a tie for 48th. He birdied two of his first eight holes and followed a bogey on No. 2 with another birdie on No. 3. Johnson has had a similar run to Flanagan, posting under-par scores in three of his last five holes.
Two Gophers finished in a tie for 55th as sophomore Will Grevlos and freshman Connor Glynn each were 8-over at 224.
Grevlos shot a 2-over 74 Tuesday that included a birdie on No. 16, while Glynn posted a 7-over 79 that featured three birdies.
Rounding out the Gophers' contingent was sophomore Harry Plowman-Ollington, who came in 75th at 22-over with a 54-hole score of 238.
Minnesota's five-tournament fall schedule has now come to a close with four top-10 finishes. The Golden Gophers will resume play Feb. 8-9 at the Big Ten Match Play event in Palm Coast, Fla.
