Minnesota Rolls Past Vermont, 90-58

MINNEAPOLIS – Four Minnesota players reached double figures as the 23rd-ranked Golden Gophers (1-1) rolled past Vermont (0-3) Sunday afternoon, 90-58, at Williams Arena for the team's first win of the season.

Freshman Jasmine Powell came off the bench to lead Minnesota with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. It was the highest-scoring performance from a Gophers non-starter since Destiny Pitts scored 20 during the third game of her freshman year on Nov. 16, 2017. Powell added a game-high four assists and a pair of rebounds.

Pitts also reached double figures with 16 points, leaving her just eight points away from becoming the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career. Pitts knocked down three 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists to fill out her stat line.

Senior Taiye Bello notched the 16th double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds as she was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Three of the rebounds were on the offensive end, moving her past Ashley Ellis-Milan (345) for third in program history with 347. In addition, her career rebound total of 730 now sits ninth in program history as she climbed past Carol Ann Shudlick (727) and Ellen Kramer (728).

The fourth player to reach double figures was redshirt junior Gadiva Hubbard. After scoring two points Tuesday in her first game back from missing all of last season with a foot injury, she poured in 12 Sunday, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Down 7-4 early in the first quarter, Minnesota scored 11 straight points and scored 23 of the final 28 points of the frame to lead 27-12 after the first 10 minutes. Bello and Pitts each had eight points in the stanza, while Powell contributed seven.

The game was never in question after the Gophers' first-quarter run. They led 33-12 on a 3-pointer from Hubbard with 7:55 left in the second quarter and never led by fewer than 20 points the rest of the way.

The largest lead came with less than 30 seconds remaining when redshirt freshman Barbora Tomancova made the second 3-pointer of her career to put Minnesota up 90-56.

Notable
Minnesota committed just five turnovers, tied for the third fewest in a game for the Gophers since 1982-83.

Quotable
"(Jasmine) Powell was terrific off the bench. She was terrific; she was poised. She had four assists and no turnovers, obviously the 19 points and got herself to the line. She got out in transition a little bit. When we have that spark and punch, it's fun to watch, and it makes us a really good team." – Minnesota head coach Lindsay Whalen on Jasmine Powell.

Up Next
Minnesota continues its season-opening six game homestand when it hosts Milwaukee on Thursday at noon for its annual Field Trip game.
