TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. Minnesota heads to Iowa for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Hawkeyes. The game will be the 113th meeting between the border rivals. Minnesota leads the series 62-48-2. Since 1935, the schools have played for the coveted Floyd of Rosedale. This game will be Minnesota's second of three trophy games this year (beat Penn State to claim the Governor's Victory Bell and will put Paul Bunyan's Axe on the line against Wisconsin). Minnesota's last win at Iowa was a 25-21 triumph in 1999. Minnesota is ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll, which is its highest ranking since it was No. 5 in 1962.
2. Minnesota has won 11 straight games (last loss was on Nov. 17, 2018 to No. 24 Northwestern), which is tied with Baylor for the third longest winning streak in the nation. Clemson (25) and Ohio State (15) are the only schools with longer winning streaks. The Gophers are one of five undefeated teams and are 9-0 for the first time since 1904, when it went 13-0. Some historical events in 1904: ice cream cone makes debut at World Fair in St. Louis, first airplane flight to last more than five minutes with the Wright Flyer II, Cy Young of Boston Americans throws first perfect game in the modern era, Theodore Roosevelt elected U.S. President and Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii were not states.
3. Minnesota is 9-0, 11-0 in its last 11 games, 13-2 in its last 15 games (11 B1G games, 1 ACC game and 3 nonconference games) and 21-13 overall under head coach P.J. Fleck. The last time Minnesota started a season 9-0 was 1904 when it was named National Champions. The last time Minnesota won 11 straight games was when it won 18 straight from 1939-42. The last time Minnesota was 13-2 in 15 games was during the 1940-42 seasons. Coach Fleck's win percentage of 61.7% ranks fourth in school history for anyone who coached more than 30 games and is the best since Bernie Bierman, who last coached at Minnesota in 1950.
4. Minnesota is 6-0 in the Big Ten (has trailed for only 10:35 in B1G play this year) for the first time since 1961 and has won six Big Ten games for the sixth time ever (2019, 1973, 1967, 1961, 1960, 1940). Minnesota has never won seven B1G games. Minnesota has a winning record in the B1G for the 47th time, but for only the eighth time since 1970. The Gophers are 9-2 in last 11 B1G games, which leads the West and is second to 11-0 Ohio State (Penn State also 9-2).
5. The Gophers are 9-0 and have now won nine games in a season nine times in school history (2019, 2016, 2003, 1905, 1904, 1903, 1902, 1901 and 1900). Minnesota was 9-4 in 2016 and 10-3 in 2003. Minnesota was 10-1 in 1905; 13-0 in 1904; 14-0-1 in 1903; 9-2-1 in 1902; 9-1-1 in 1901 and 10-0-2 in 1900. Minnesota has won 10 or more games in a season only five times and those years were 2003 (10-3), 1905 (10-1), 1904 (13-0), 1903 (14-0-1) and 1900 (10-0-2). Henry Williams, who is the namesake of Williams Arena where both Minnesota's basketball teams play (1905, 1904, 1903, 1900), and Glen Mason (2003) are the only coaches ever to lead Minnesota to 10 wins. Mason's tenth win was a bowl win.
Minnesota has scored at least 28 points in all nine games this season, which is something it had never done prior to this year. In 1904 - when the Gophers were competing against high school teams - Minnesota scored 28 or more points in their first eight games (107, 77, 75, 65, 47, 35, 32 and 146). Minnesota scored 16 points in its ninth game, which was a 16-12 win against Nebraska.
6. Minnesota has scored 31 points or more in its last eight games. Those are games two through nine this year, as the Gophers scored 28 to open the season against South Dakota State. Minnesota last scored 31 or more points in eight straight games in 1904, as it started the season scoring 107, 77, 75, 65, 47, 35, 32 and 146 points. The streak ended when Minnesota beat Nebraska 16-12.
7. Minnesota was ranked No. 13 in the AP Poll when it beat No. 5 Penn State, 31-26, last Saturday. It was the first game in Minneapolis that featured two Top 15 teams since the No. 5 Gophers beat No. 1 Michigan State 13-0 in 1961. Last Saturday's win was Minnesota's first win against a Top 5 five team since it beat No. 2 Penn State on the road in 1999. It was Minnesota's first home win against a Top 5 team since it beat No. 1 Michigan 16-0 in 1977.
8. Minnesota has thrown for 21 touchdowns this year after tossing 20 touchdowns last season. This is the first time since 2006 (22) and 2007 (25) that Minnesota had consecutive seasons with 20 passing touchdowns. Minnesota rushed for 23 touchdowns and threw for 20 touchdowns last year. This year, Minnesota has already rushed for 22 touchdowns and thrown for 21. This is the first time that Minnesota has consecutive 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdown seasons since 2005 (34 rush, 20 pass) and 2006 (25 rush, 22 pass) and would be only the second time ever since 1955.
9. Minnesota has outscored its Big Ten opponents 237-98. The Gophers have the No. 2 scoring offense (39.5) and is tied with Michigan for the No. 4 scoring defense (16.3) in the league.
10. Minnesota has won four Big Ten games this year by at least 20 points for the first time since 1934. That year, Minnesota won all five of its Big Ten games by at least 20 points as it was named Big Ten Champions and National Champions.
