Five Minutes with Sydney Scobee

Senior goaltender Sydney Scobee caught up with the Voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann last week.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior goaltender Sydney Scobee sat down with the voice of Gopher Women's Hockey Dan Hamann to discuss the team's success, her reaction to Amy Potomak's SportsCenter appearance, and a very important fan of the team.

Dan Hamann: My player guest today between the periods of our exhibition game against Hamline University is senior goaltender, Sydney Scobee. Sydney recorded a career-high 63 saves against Wisconsin. You must be feeling really good with how things are sitting, right?

Sydney Scobee: For sure. It's awesome to get five out of six points against Wisconsin. As a whole team, we were really excited about that. We went out there both nights and gave it our all. I'm pretty proud.

DH: There was a lot on the line, not only having it be the Border Battle, but the No. 1 and No. 2 programs in the country going against each other. Was there any additional pressure on the team as far as performance level?

SS: I don't think so. Going into that week, we viewed ourselves as underdogs, and it's sometimes easier to view yourself that way because as an underdog, you really have nothing to lose. Last year didn't end the way it wanted to, so we wanted to get revenge and have fun when we went out there.

DH: You're not the underdog anymore, being No. 1 in both polls. You know there's a large target on your back now, right?

SS: Right. I think we face that a lot during the year, no matter of our ranking in the polls. We know that every team is going to show up to play us, so we have the same mindset going into each match-up. We know we need to play our game.

DH: How do you refocus after you let in a goal that you feel you should have been able to stop?

SS: I think when something like that happens, you have to let it go as quickly as possible. Once that one went in during the first game, I wanted it back as soon as it went in. I thought it missed the net, but I was off-angle. As a goalie, when one goes in like that, you have to say, 'No more,' and hold them to that one-goal lead as long as you can.

DH: Talk about the way your defense played during the Wisconsin series.

SS: They played great, and our forwards did as well. Everyone was matched up really well, so Wisconsin wasn't able to generate as many scoring chances as we assumed they were going to. There wasn't a ton of screening going on, and our defense did a great job of grabbing rebounded shots.

DH: You had a special fan in the house that weekend, Kayla, a young girl with autism. She fell in love with you when you were playing in Vermont and traveled all the way from Vermont to see you play last weekend. Talk about the relationship you've built with her and what it meant for you and the team to have her as a fan of yours.

SS: Kayla is a special one, that's for sure. I met her during my freshman year at Vermont when she was our Impact Team Member and right away, we just really hit it off. She really liked me because I was big and had big goalie pads, so I got on her good side right away. It was so special having her here this weekend. Her mom is so great and I've kept in good contact with her. It makes you feel that hockey is something bigger than yourself, and if you can make someone's day, it's all worth it.

DH: Has the team been surprised about the attention they've gotten over Amy Potomak's goal?

SS: That was fantastic. Right after the game, we wanted to make sure it was on SportsCenter. We spent the hours after the game tweeting it to different famous accounts on Twitter to try and get it some traction, and they seemed to love it. I ran into her the other day and was like, "Oh my gosh, is that THE Amy Potomak? The girl with the goal?!" She says she's gotten a few comments in classes, so to see the attention she's getting is awesome.

DH: Where can this team go? We're at No. 1 right now and are sitting good. How do you carry that momentum?

SS: I think we need to remember that we can't be satisfied, but humbled by the success we've gotten. We have to treat it like we are in the No. 2 position or even lower. We know how we can play, and that's how we have to show up to the rink for every practice and game.
