Freshman Feature: Valen Watrous

With just a few weeks until the annual Maroon and Gold Intrasquad Meet on Dec. 7, we're getting to know the five newcomers of Minnesota men's gymnastics in our Freshman Feature series. Next is Valen Watrous. Valen hails from Franklin, Tenn. and previously competed for GymTek Academy. He is a four-time state champion and former Tennessee Gymnast of the Year. Watrous competed in Region 8 with fellow Gophers rookies Crew Bold and Donte McKinney.

Gopher Sports: How has your time on campus and team been so far?
Valen Watrous: It's definitely way different than Nashville. It has been great though. I love the atmosphere the team creates in and out of the gym. 

GS: What are you most looking forward to in your first school year and season? 
VW: I can't wait to take with the floor with these guys and experience the energy they bring to competitions. School-wise, we'll manage. 

GS: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota? 
VW: I just felt an instant connection to these guys and I loved campus. The amount of support that student-athletes receive is also incredible. 

GS: How did you get into gymnastics? 
VW: It started with one mommy and me class and it never stopped. 

GS: What is you favorite gymnastics memory?
VW: One of my favorite memories is getting compete with the Minnesota Team at the Windy City Chicago competition last year. 

GS: What are your hobbies outside of gymnastics? 
VW: I really enjoy music and am learning to play guitar. 

GS: What is one thing Gopher fans should know about you? 
VW: They should know that I have a lot of energy and I will be the loudest one at competitions.
