Head coach Brad Frost is pleased to welcome seven student-athletes to the Gopher women's hockey program.

MINNEAPOLIS – Head coach Brad Frost and the Golden Gopher women's hockey team are pleased to announce the addition for seven incoming student-athletes for the 2020-21 season. Addie Burton, Anne Cherkowski, Josey Dunne, Tella Jungels, Abbey Murphy, Maggie Nicholson, and Audrey Wethington make up the newest class of Gophers.

"We are thrilled to welcome these seven players to the Gopher family," Frost said. "They are wonderful people who will do great things for our program and the University of Minnesota. They are academically gifted, passionate about hockey, and live out the values of our program. As a staff, we are excited to have them in the Maroon & Gold."

Addie Burton, Blake School (Orono, Minn.)

Addie Burton joins the Gophers as a left-handed forward from the Blake School. As a junior last season, Burton recorded 56 points (25g-31a) and led Blake to the Section 6AA final; the Bears finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in Class AA but fell to eventual state champion Edina, 3-2, in the section championship game. Burton and the Bears finished as back-to-back Minnesota Class A state champions in 2016-17 and 2015-16 and were state runners-up in 2014-15. As a member of the U.S. Under-18 Women's Select Team, Burton competed at the 2018 U18 Series vs. Canada in Calgary. She also participated in the 2018 USA Hockey Women's National Festival and has attended USA Hockey development camps. She is the daughter of Patrick and Kirsten Burton.

Frost on Burton: Addie is a strong, powerful forward. She puts great energy on the puck and has a strong shot, which fuels her offensive game.

Anne Cherkowski, Pursuit of Excellence (Coldstream, B.C.)

Anne Cherkowski joins the Gophers as a right-handed forward from the Pursuit of Excellence Academy. Five games into her senior season at POE, Cherkowski has 142 career points (69g-73a) in 72 career games. As a member of Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team, Cherkowski won gold at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship. She was part of the 2019 Under-18 August Series against the U.S. and attended National Women's Under-18 Team Selection Camps in 2018 and 2019. Cherkowski represented British Columbia at the 2017 and 2019 National Women's Under-18 Championship and the 2019 Canada Winter Games as well. She is the daughter of Kevin and Sabre Cherkowski.

Frost on Cherkowski: Anne is a skilled forward and has great vision. She makes those around her better with how she sees the game. She is a smooth skater who gets up the ice well, and this combination allows her to be a great offensive threat.

Josey Dunne, Chicago Mission (O'Fallon, Mo.)

Josey Dunne joins the Gophers as a left-handed defense from the Chicago Mission. While playing for the Chicago Mission, Dunne helped the team to 16U state and national titles along with a 14U state title. She has attended USA Hockey player development camps as well. Tella Jungels, Edina High School (Edina, Minn.)

Tella Jungels joins the Gophers as a left-handed forward from Edina High School. Jungels enters her senior season with the Hornets having won three-consecutive Minnesota Class AA state titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. As a junior last season, Jungels recorded 30 points (10g-20a) for the Hornets and led Edina to the 2019 Minnesota Class AA state title, tying the championship game in the third period to send the game to overtime as Edina defeated Brainerd, 4-3 in double overtime. Jungels was named All-Lake Conference honorable mention last season as well. She is the daughter of Keith and Kelly Jungels.

Frost on Jungels: Tella is a tenacious forward. She is relentless on the puck and creates turnovers because of it. Tella has a knack for getting to the net front, which allows her to create offensive opportunities, often leading to goals.

Abbey Murphy, Chicago Mission (Evergreen Park, Ill.)

Abbey Murphy joins the Gophers as a right-handed forward from the Chicago Mission. While playing for the Chicago Mission, Murphy helped the team to 16U state and national titles along with a 14U state title. Nicholson has attended USA Hockey Women's National Festivals and player development camps as well. She is the daughter of Lisa and Wayne Nicholson.

Frost on Nicholson: Maggie is a well-rounded defenseman. She plays well at both ends of the ice. Maggie can one-time the puck, make strong plays on the rush, and use her size to be very effective.

Audrey Wethington, Blake School (Edina, Minn.)

Audrey Wethington joins the Gophers as a right-handed forward from the Blake School. As a junior last season, Wethington recorded 28 points (12g-15a) and led Blake to the Section 6AA final; the Bears finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in Class AA but fell to eventual state champion Edina, 3-2, in the section championship game.
