Minnesota sophomore is only Big Ten player among 12 honorees

University of Minnesota receiver Rashod Bateman was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Biletnikoff Award today by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the prestigious award.

Bateman was one of 12 semifinalists announced. He is the only semifinalist from the Big Ten and is one of three sophomores on the list.

Bateman joins Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan as a semifinalist for a postseason award, as Morgan was announced last week as one of 16 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. Minnesota is one of only five schools – joining Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and SMU – to have a semifinalist on each list.

Through 10 games this year, Bateman has 44 catches for 945 yards and seven touchdowns. He is just 224 yards shy of tying teammate Tyler Johnson's single season record of 1,169 receiving yards set in 2018.

Bateman crossed 1,000 career receiving yards at Purdue - which was his 17th career game – to become the second fastest Gopher to reach the milestone. The fastest was Ryan Thelwell, who did so in 15 games. (Notables: Ernie Wheelwright, 20 games; Eric Decker, 21; Tyler Johnson, 26)

Bateman set freshman program records in 2018 in receptions (51) and yards (704) and his six touchdowns ranked second. This year, he has 44 catches for 945 yards (sophomore record) and 7 touchdowns. The sophomore records he is still chasing are 67 receptions (Eric Decker) and 8 touchdowns (Maxx Williams).

Bateman has caught at least one pass in all 23 games he has played. He caught seven passes for 203 yards against Penn State this year, which was the second most in a game in school history (most in a Big Ten game). Thelwell owns the school record of 228 yards, which he set against Ball State in 1996.

Bateman also caught six passes for 177 yards at Purdue earlier this year and has four 100-yard games this year and five (tied for ninth in school history) in his career.

In 23 career games, he has 95 catches (tied for 17th in school history) for 1,649 yards (12th in school history) and 13 touchdowns (tied for 12th in school history).

The 2019 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on Dec. 12, 2019, at the College Football Hall of Fame on The Home Depot College Football Awards. The show will be broadcast from 7-9 p.m. on ESPN.
