Gophers' 1,000-Point Club Has New Member in Destiny Pitts

MINNEAPOLIS -- Entering Sunday's matchup with Arizona State, Minnesota junior Destiny Pitts was only five of points from a milestone that very few Gophers have reached. Before tipoff, the Detroit, Mich., native sat with 995 career points, just an arm's reach from becoming the 25th Gopher to reach 1,000 points in their career at the University of Minnesota.
Her march to the milestone began with 8:46 left in the first quarter as Pitts drove through traffic in the lane and put in a contested layup, earning a trip to the line for a three-point opportunity. She hit from the charity stripe, leaving her two points shy. Later in the quarter, she earned her place in the 1,000-point club as she hit a pull-up jumper in the paint with 2:09 left in the first.
Reaching 1,000 career points is a feat only 24 other Gophers in the history of the program have managed to reach, and Pitts was able to reach it in a mere 69 games, the ninth fastest player to do so for the Maroon and Gold. The record for fastest player to reach the mark is shared between two former Gophers who both punched their tickets into the club in 51 games: 80's great Laura Coenen and Gophers head coach Lindsay Whalen.
"It's super exciting, but it's a credit to my teammates and coaches I've had since I've been here," Pitts said to Big Ten Network's Christy Winters Scott in a postgame interview. "And just all the hard work I've put in with my teammates and myself. I'm excited we got the win today."
Entering the 2019-20 season, Pitts was 42 points away from the 1,000-point mark after two successful seasons on campus. On her way to becoming the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, she scored 438 points, 15 away from cracking Minnesota's top-five scoring seasons for a freshman. She then followed it up with 520 as a sophomore as she took home All-Big Ten First Team honors from the league's media.
After her strong 22-point performance Sunday against Arizona State, Pitts sits 24th on the all-time scorers list at Minnesota with 1,017. If she continues at her current pace, she'll be reach nearly 1,400 points by the end of the regular season which would move her into the top-15 and well on pace to break into the top 10 by the end of her career with the Gophers.
