MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 27 University of Minnesota women's cross country team and Gophers redshirt junior Alec Basten are set to represent the Maroon & Gold at the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday.

Abby Kohut-Jackson leads the Gophers in making her third NCAA Cross Country Championships appearance after placing 231st in 2017 and 215th in 2018. Anastasia Korzenowski (230th) and Jaycie Thomsen (234th) also return to the national meet after finishing as Minnesota's fifth and sixth runners a year ago. Meanwhile, Carissa Dock, Lindsey Greenlund, Olivia Hummel (alternate in 2018), and Sarah Werking are set to make their NCAA debuts.

Zetta Mason will serve as an alternate for the Gophers' NCAA squad for the third consecutive season while Tate Sweeney returns to the alternate corps after serving in the capacity a year ago, and Maria Eastman will serve as an alternate for the first time in her career.

On the men's side, Basten is set to make his NCAA Cross Country Championships debut. He is the first Gopher to represent the men's team at the NCAA Cross Country Championships since the team finished 19th in 2015.

About the NCAA Field

Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in the 2019 NCAA Championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Champion Illinois and runner-up Tulsa earned the automatic bids from the Gophers' Midwest Regional. The Minnesota women join Air Force, Boise State, Boston College, Colorado, Columbia, Indiana, Northern Arizona, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin to make up the at-large women's team qualifiers.

Last Time Out: Midwest Regional

Behind all-region performances from Anastasia Korzenowski (ninth), Abby Kohut-Jackson (13th), and Sarah Werking (24th), the Gopher women scored 130 points in the team race to secure a third-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Lindsey Greenlund (41st) and Carissa Dock (43rd) rounded out Minnesota's top five. Meanwhile Basten led the Gopher men with a fourth-place showing, earning all-region honors with a time of 30:48.3 as the Maroon & Gold men finished sixth in the team race with 181 points.

Gopher Women at the NCAA Championship

The Gopher women return to the national championship for the 14th time in the last 15 years after finishing 29th last season. Minnesota has made 24 team appearances at the NCAA Championship since 1974. The program's highest team finish came in 2005 when the Gophers placed ninth. All-Americans Ladia Albertson-Junkans and Emily Brown led Minnesota's efforts. The ninth-place showing was the first of five-straight top-12 finishes for the Gophers. The Gophers' most recent All-American is Stephanie Price, who finished 31st in 2010. Minnesota's all-time highest individual finisher at the NCAA championships is Megan Duwell, who took eighth overall in 2009.
