‘U’ Falls to Notre Dame 5-3 in Finale
11/2/2019 7:30:00 PM | Men's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS – Jared Moe recorded a new career high for saves for the second-straight night and eight Gopher Hockey skaters tallied points, but it wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon as the Maroon & Gold fell 5-3 to No. 4/5 Notre Dame in the finale of this weekend's Big Ten series at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Minnesota (3-4-1 overall, 0-1-1-1 Big Ten) picked up goals from Brannon McManus, Jack Perbix and Garrett Wait in the loss.
The Gophers jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period, but Notre Dame (5-0-1, 1-0-1-0) responded with two unanswered goals of its own in the second period. The 'U' briefly regained a one-goal lead before the Irish scored three-straight goals to seal the win including an empty-net tally in the final minute of regulation.
Moe, who made his third-straight start on Saturday, made 34 saves on 38 shots for a new single-game career high. The freshman's previous best was 29 in Friday's 2-2 overtime tie (Moe also made two saves in Friday's 3-on-3 overtime session that do not count towards his season total).
The Gophers were outshot 39-27 overall on Friday night including a 17-2 mark in the final frame. The Irish were 1-for-3 on the power play as opposed to an 0-for-3 performance on the advantage by the Maroon & Gold – Minnesota has now gone four-straight games without a power-play goal after recording five power-play goals in the previous three games. Notre Dame won 41 of the game's 59 face offs.
Notable
Minnesota's second goal of the night featured a pair of firsts for two Gophers freshmen as Jack Perbix tallied his first career goal off the first career point and first career assist from Jaxon Nelson.
Quotable
"We grew up in some areas. We saw what our "good hockey" can look like, and it looks pretty good," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We didn't sustain it tonight."
