No. 1 Minnesota is off from competition this weekend but hosts Natalie Darwitz's Hamline Pipers in an exhibition game Tuesday night.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 1 University of Minnesota women's hockey team is off from competition this weekend but not before the Golden Gophers host the 2019 NCAA Division III national runner-up Hamline Pipers, under their direction of Gophers alumna Natalie Darwitz, in an exhibition game at 7:07 p.m. CT Tuesday night at Ridder Arena. Admission is free.
Last Time Out
Minnesota (10-1-1, 6-1-1-1 WCHA) took over the number one national ranking after taking five-of-six WCHA points from then top-ranked Wisconsin at home last weekend with a 4-2 win in game one and a 2-2 overtime tie and 1-0 shootout win in game two. Grace Zumwinkle (2g-2a), Sarah Potomak (2g-1a), Taylor Heise (1g-1a), and Amy Potomak (2a) recorded multiple points against the Badgers, and Sydney Scobee combined for a career-high 63 saves on 67 shots faced in the series.
About the Pipers
Hamline is coached by Minnesota alumna Natalie Darwitz, who enters her fifth season at the helm of the program, and the Pipers enter the 2019-20 season after finishing as NCAA Division III runner-up a year ago. Hamline (0-1-0) opened its season by dropping a 4-1 decision on the road at Adrian last weekend.Â
Scoring Milestones
The next point for Grace Zumwinkle (53g-46a) will be her 100th career point as a Gopher; she is on the verge of becoming the 35th Gopher in program history to reach the century mark. Emily Brown (12g-36a) is also closing in on 50 career points after ending the weekend with 48 career points. In addition, Sarah Potomak is Minnesota's active career scoring leader, ranked 19th in Gophers' history with 147 career points (53g-94a). She is chasing Bobbi Ross (75g-77a), who ranks 18th in program history with 152 points.
Offensive Defense
Minnesota's blue line leads the nation in scoring among defense with 11 goals on the season, including an NCAA-high four game-winning goals. Five of Minnesota's six defense have already scored their first goals of the season, and all six have multiple points on the year: Emily Brown (4g-5a), Olivia Knowles (3g-4a), Madeline Wethington (2g-3a), Crystalyn Hengler (1g-3a), Gracie Ostertag (1g-4a), and Patti Marshall (4a).
