Antoine Winfield Jr. received the Carl Eller Award, while Tyler Johnson and Rodney Smith shared the Bruce Smith Award

The University of Minnesota football team and the Goal Line Club celebrated the 2019 season at the annual Golden Gopher Football Banquet on Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium.

The highlight of the program was the announcement of the team's annual awards. Receiver Rashod Bateman and defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr., were honored with the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is given annually to the team's most valuable player or players.

Winfield, who was named First-Team All America, also received the Carl Eller Award (outstanding defensive player) after totaling 83 tackles and tying a school record with seven interceptions.

Tyler Johnson and Rodney Smith shared the Bruce Smith Award, which is given to the most outstanding offensive player. Johnson set senior records with 74 catches and 1,114 yards as he became only the second Gopher ever to eclipse 3,000 career receiving yards. Smith rushed for 1,094 yards and set the school record for all-purpose yards.

Jacob Herbers won the Bobby Bell Award (outstanding special teams player) after serving as the team's punter and holder. Herbers is a big reason why Minnesota has the No. 1 ranked punt return defense in the nation. Opponents have returned four punts for a -3 yards this year.

Seth Green and Winston DeLattiboudere received the Tony Dungy Character and Community Service Award (great character on and off the field) this year. Green receive the same award last season as well.

The Butch Nash Award (competitive on the field and in the classroom) was presented to Academic All-Americans Blaise Andries and Sam Renner. Renner is a repeat winner of the award.

The Paul Giel Award (unselfishness and most concern for Minnesota) was presented to Mohamed Ibrahim and the Neil Fredenburg Award (love of the game) went to Tanner Morgan.

Kamal Martin received the Gary Tinsley Award for best embracing the underdog persona of Gary Tinsley, who played for the Gophers from 2008-11 and passed away in April 2012.

The Outstanding Offensive Freshman of the Year award was presented to Curtis Dunlap Jr., while Braelen Oliver was recognized as Outstanding Defensive Freshman of the Year.

The Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year was Johnny Santaga, while DeAngelo Carter was honored as Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year. The Special Teams Scout Player of the Year was awarded to Derik LeCaptain.

Sam Schlueter received the Offensive Trench Award (best offensive lineman) and Carter Coughlin was the repeat winner of the Defensive Trench Award (best defensive lineman).

John Michael Schmitz and Thomas Barber received the R.T.B Trust Award and Justus Harris, Tyler Nubin, Braelen Oliver, Thomas Rush, Jonathan Santaga, Mariano Sori-Marin, Alex Strazzanti and Calvin Swenson were recognized as Quad Team Members, who played on all four special teams.
