Catching Up With Sydney Large

12/23/2019 3:22:00 PM | Rowing

After making the switch from club rowing to rowing at the division one level, Junior coxswain Sydney Large has grown and blossomed into her new role. She coxed the 2V4 boat to a first place finish at the Head of the Mississippi this fall and took fifth at the 2019 Big Ten Championships in the 2V4. When she isn't juggling school or rowing, she is still involved with sports, working with Gopher Sport and Bleachr.

Gopher Sports: How would you describe your experience on this team over the past few seasons?
Sydney Large: Amazing! I love being a part of a program that is on the rise. It's great seeing the energy in the boathouse and being surrounded by people pushing themselves to compete at a higher level.

GS: How did you get into rowing?
SL: I read the book "Boys in the Boat" in high school and found it extremely interesting. I started off on the club team my Freshman year, but wanted to experience a higher level of competition and made the switch. Best decision I've ever made.

GS: What race are you most looking forward to in the spring?
SL: The Big Ten Championships! I'm super excited to compete against teams at such a high level. Also, the race is located in Indianapolis this year. I grew up and started playing sports in the Indianapolis area, so it will be cool to see my sports career come full circle.

GS: How have you improved as a coxswain since first joining the team
SL: In every single way possible. Listening back to my recordings from my Freshman year to this year, it sounds like a completely different coxswain. My teammates always give me great feedback, so I'm trying to constantly improve and adjust.

GS: What are some of your hobbies outside of rowing?
SL: I spend a lot of time working with Gopher Sports social media as well as working in marketing with a company called "Bleachr". Bleachr makes apps for professional tennis tournaments and sports teams.

GS: What are you going to miss most about this team and sport after you graduate in the spring?
SL: I'm going to miss waking up every morning and getting to work towards a greater goal with an extremely talented and motivated group of people. A lot of people on this team have quickly become some of my best friends, the sunrises and just going fast will be missed as well.

GS: Do you have any post-grad plans?
SL: I would like to get a full-time job doing something in sports communications or marketing.

Quick Hits:
Dream vacation? Sydney, Australia
Favorite class? Business of Sport
Would you rather be eight feet tall or three feet tall? Well, I'm already on the shorter side so I'd pick three feet tall. I could still be a coxswain if I was that small too.
Favorite holiday? Thanksgiving. I get to be around my three favorite things: Family, Food, and Football.
