STARTING FIVE
• The Gophers open up Big Ten Conference play on the road, traveling to border rival Iowa on Monday evening in the first of two meetings thisÂ
season with the Hawkeyes. Despite their traditional rivalry, this is just the second time in the last five seasons that the teams will play a home-and-home series in conference play.
• Minnesota has been tested early and often, playing one of the nation's toughest schedules in both conference and non-conference play. Through the games of Dec. 7, the Gophers' schedule ranks as the fifth toughest in NCAA Division I based on cumulative opposition, with the Maroon andÂ
Gold's opposition combining for a 76.3 winning percentage - a figureÂ
which also ranks tops in the Big Ten.
• Already twice this year, the Gophers have taken aim at the record books from beyond the 3-point arc. Against Central Michigan, MinnesotaÂ
drained 14 treys, which ties for the second-most in school history (last: 12/13/02 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson). Minnesota sank 13 3-pointers in the season opener vs. Cleveland State.Â
• Marcus Carr put up a career performance on Monday night against his former conference foe Clemson, as the Pittsburgh transfer poured in a game- and career-high 24 points on 50 percent field goal shooting. Carr was one assist shy of a double-double as he powered the Gopher offense.
• The Gophers already rank highly among the nation's college basketball teams in several categories. As of Dec. 8, Minnesota is 27th in blocked shots per game (B1G: 4th), 29th in 3-pointers made per game (B1G: 1st), and 33rd in assists per game (B1G: 4th). Daniel Oturu is ninth in the country in blocks (B1G: 2nd) while 11th in rebounds per game (B1G: 1st) and 23rd in field goal percentage (B1G: 1st). Marcus Carr is 13th in the country in assists per game (B1G: 2nd). Payton Willis leads the Big Ten and ranks 59th in the nation in 3-pointers made per game.
SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES
• Iowa is 6-3 on the season including a loss in their first Big Ten game, a 103-91 decision at Michigan on Thursday night.Â
• Luka Garza powers the Hawkeyes nearly averaging a double-double with team highs of 22.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. The Big Ten's leading scorer, the junior big man helped out his own cause with 44 points in the loss at Ann Arbor.
• Two other Hawkeyes average double figure scoring in Joe Wieskamp (10.7) and CJ Fredrick (10.5).
• Iowa is playing its first home game in more than two weeks, after traveling to the Las Vegas Invitational for two games before road contests at Syracuse and Michigan. They are 4-1 thus far this season at Carver Hawkeye Arena, with the loss coming to DePaul in the Gavitt Games on Nov. 11.
UP NEXT
• The Gophers continue Big Ten play, welcoming one of the nation's top teams in Ohio State to the Barn for the Maroon and Gold's Big Ten home opener on Sunday.Â
• Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m., on BTN while KTLK 1130 AM/103.5 FM will carry the Gopher Radio Network broadcast in the Twin Cities.
