Wiskus and Herzog Qualify for Winter Cup

The Gophers don't have a meet scheduled over Valentine's Day weekend, but two of them will spend it competing on one of the highest stages.

Sophomore Shane Wiskus and senior captain Shaun Herzog have both qualified for the USA Gymnastics 2019 Winter Cup Challenge and will compete Feb. 15-17 at the Southpoint Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Both will compete All-Around in the event.

Wiskus pre-qualified for the competition after competing with the U.S. Senior National Team at the 2018 U.S. Nationals in Boston this past summer. Wiskus, last season's Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, is no stranger to the Winter Cup. He was a qualifier before his college career and also went to last year's competition. He took ninth overall with a 162.900 and earned three top-five finishes: A tie for second on floor with a two-day total of 28.550, fourth place on high bar with a 27.400 and fifth on parallel bars with a 27.800.

Wiskus is currently ranked No. 10 nationally on parallel bars and No. 6 in All-Around. He holds Minnesota's highest season scores this year on floor, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar. Wiskus started the season with a second place finish on pommel horse at the Rocky Mountain Open (14.100) and added another second place plaudit at the Windy City Invitational with a 13.900 on high bar. At Minnesota's first home meet, he took second on pommel horse (13.450) and parallel bars (14.300) and tied for third on high bar (13.550).

Herzog qualified for the Winter Cup following the Gophers' appearance at the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 19. He also attended last season, after putting together a breakout season as a junior. He excelled on vault, where he finished with a two-day total of 28.500 and came in sixth. He also finished high bar with a 26.300, good for another top 10 finish in eighth.

Herzog is again making strides in his senior season. He came in second in the All-Around at the Windy City Invitational with a new career high of 79.700. He also set a new career high on pommel horse with a 12.800. One of three captains, he helped lead the Gophers to their best team score all season last weekend in a dual against Michigan and set new season highs in rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. His 14.750 is Minnesota's best vault mark all year and the fourth-highest in the NCAA.

The Winter Cup features competition from senior and junior levels. Wiskus and Herzog will be joined by former Gopher Ellis Mannon ('15) at the event. Mannon is an NCAA, two-time Big Ten and Winter Cup champion on pommel horse. He was also Minnesota's most recent Nissen-Emery Award recipient.

A future Gopher will also be making an appearance at the Winter Cup. Crew Bold, signed for the 2019-2020 freshman class, competed at the U.S. National Championships last summer and will be represented in the Winter Cup's junior division.
