Gophers Start Strong on Day One in Evanston

The Gophers put up strong scores on the first day of their tri-dual meet against Northwestern and Purdue with the men's team leading both the Wildcats (119-67) and the Boilermakers (102-84). The women split on day one as they top Purdue 103.50-82.50 but lag behind Northwestern 95-91.
Five Minnesota swimmers posted B cut times on the opening day of this weekend's dual meet. Chantal Nack was the first to do so, swimming a 1:46.84 to win the women's 200 Free. Tevyn Waddell raced the 100 Back in 53.60 to claim the win. Max McHugh posted his B cut time in the 100 Breast after touching the wall in 53.57 to finish first and Bowen Becker won the 50 Free after swimming a 19.83.
Lindsey Kozelsky set a new pool record at Norris Aquatics Center as she won the 100 Breast with her B cut time of 1:00.68. This time replaced the previous time of 1:00.77 from Notre Dame's Emma Reaney back in 2014.
Matt Thomas, McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Becker earned another of the 11 Gophers event wins as they took the 200 Medley Relay with their time of 1:28.38 and narrowly edged out Purdue's team (1:28.89).
Tim Sates won the men's 200 Free with his first-place time of 1:37.97, Thomas took first-place in the men's 200 Butterfly with his time of 1:48.63 and Zoe Avestruz came in first in the women's 50 Free after racing a 23.17.
The Minnesota 800 Free Relay team of Waddell, Avestruz, Kate Sullivan and Nack claimed their event win after finishing the race in 7:21.68. The men's 800 Free Relay team also found the top of the podium after completing the event in 6:35.65.
The Minnesota women's dive team went 3-4-5 in the well as Kristen Hayden, Sarah Bacon and Xiao Fu scored a 315.20, a 310.25 and a 285.15 respectively in the 3-meter competition. Alan Leblang represented the Minnesota men as he came in fourth in the 1-meter competition with his score of 294.60.

-The women's 200 Medley Relay A team of Emily Cook, Kozelsky, Waddell and Avestruz posted a second-place finish after swimming the race in 1:39.91.
-Abbey Erwin finished third in the 1000 Free with her time of 10:04.96, coming in behind Northwestern's Lebl (10:03.81) and Purdue's Meckstroth (10:02.13).
-The Gophers went 3-4-5 in the men's 1000 Free as Nick Plachinski touched the wall in 9:23.93 for third, Aidan Dillon finished in 9:27.77 for fourth and Michael Messner raced a 9:30.97 for fifth.
-Cameron Kelley placed third in the 200 Free after swimming a 1:39.53.
-Emily Cook swam a 55:07 to finish fourth in the 100 Back.
-Olivia Bloomer touched the wall in 23.72 to tie for fourth place in the women's 50 Free.
-Eitan Yudashkin touched the wall in 55.67 to claim second in the 100 Breast and swam a 20.84 in the 50 Free to claim fifth.
-Nack and Kozelsky took second and third respectively in the 200 Individual Medley. Nack touched the wall in 2:01.34 while Kozelsky finished the race in 2:03.51.
Pokkinen finished the men's 200 Individual Medley in 1:50.62 to place second. McHugh touched the wall in 1:53.04 to earn fourth place.
