NCBWA Tabs Meyer for Stopper of the Year Watch List

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Gopher Baseball right-handed pitcher Max Meyer once again finds himself on the radar of the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) as the sophomore closer landed on the "Stopper of the Year" Watch List announced Monday.
Meyer achieved a spot on the Midseason Watch List in 2018, when he went on to finish third in all of NCAA with 16 saves, tying the Minnesota program record for a single season. He narrowly missed landing among the five finalists for last year's honor. The award was first established in 2005, and Brian Glowicki ('17) was the most recent Gopher before Meyer to earn a spot on the Watch List.
Meyer will compete in the outfield for Minnesota this spring while continuing to anchor the back end of the bullpen. Last year, he, posting a 2.06 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 32.2 innings spanning 26 appearances. He held opponents to just a .163 batting average while allowing less than one baserunner per inning (0.94). Meyer was a Preseason All-America Second Team selection from the NCBWA earlier this spring, and a Freshman All-American from the same organization after last season.
The Gopher is the lone representative from the Big Ten among this season's 75 preseason watch list selections, a number that includes players from 26 conferences.
Minnesota opens the season this Friday, Feb. 15 against a fellow NCAA Tournament team from 2018 in Gonzaga at the College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Arizona. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
