COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 4-3 win on Friday night for the Gophers at Value City Arena snapped No. 2/3 Ohio State's seven-game winning streak as Minnesota handed the Buckeyes just their second loss in the last 15 games. The Maroon & Gold remain unbeaten against the Big Ten frontrunners (1-0-2) heading into tomorrow's series finale.
Minnesota (12-14-4 overall, 9-9-3-0 Big Ten) snapped a four-game road skid with the win behind goals from Jack Sadek, Nathan Burke, Ryan Zuhlsdorf and Scott Reedy.
The Gophers jumped out to a two-goal lead on Friday night and never trailed in the win over the Buckeyes. Sadek opened things up with his fourth goal of the year at 16:44 of the first period when he put home a shot from the point after being set up by Sam Rossini and Burke. Burke added to the lead with his fourth goal of the year at 11:56 of the second period, set up with some nifty passing by BMW Line partners Blake McLaughlin and Sammy Walker.
Ohio State (19-6-4, 12-4-3-2) snuck onto the board late in the second period when John Wiittala scored at 19:44 on the Buckeyes' second shot on goal of the period.
Zuhlsdorf reclaimed the two-goal lead at 6:10 of the third period when he snapped a 99-game goal drought dating back to Oct. 9, 2016 (his first series as a freshman with the Gophers). The junior defenseman snuck a shot from the blue line into the corner of the net with assists going to McLaughlin and Burke. Burke ended the night with a game-high three points (one goal, two assists) for his first career three-point performance.
Eric Schierhorn picked up the win for Minnesota in his first start since Dec. 29, making 21 saves to improve to 3-4-0 on the year. The senior earned his 58th career win on Friday. Sean Romeo made 19 saves in net for Ohio State, falling to 8-5-2 on the year.
The Big Ten's best special teams units were successful again on Friday night as Minnesota's power-play ended the game 1-for-4 while the penalty kill was 1-for-1. Ohio State outshot the Gophers 24-23 in the series opener.
Minnesota returns to action on Saturday against Ohio State on Big Ten Network. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. CT. Tickets for the Maroon & Gold's remaining two home series against Notre Dame (Feb. 22-23) and Arizona State (March 1-2) are available at GopherSports.com.
