‘U’ Claims Six Wins at Snowshoe Open

2/15/2019 10:03:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track & field program picked up six events titles on Saturday as the men hosted the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on campus. The meet was Minnesota's final home indoor competition of the season heading into next week's Big Ten championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The men's weight throw competition opened the meet and stole the show right out of the gate as Minnesota listed the top four finishers including two of the best performances in school history. Kieran McKeag led the way with his third weight throw victory of the season while he has now thrown a new personal record in four-straight competitions. Friday's leading mark of 21.97 meters (72-01.00 ft.) jumps McKeag up to second all-time at Minnesota (only Jon Lehman's 2014 school record of 22.98 meters (75-04.75 ft.) stands ahead of McKeag) with his new personal record ranking ninth in the NCAA this season.

Jon Nerdal also hit a personal record of 20.69 meters (67-10.75 ft.) to finish as the runner-up and move into eighth all-time at Minnesota. Connor Rousemiller finished third at 19.63 meters (64-05.00 ft.) while Kaleb Siekmeier was fourth at 19.61 meters (64-04.00 ft.).

The Maroon & Gold also dominated the 600 meters with the top three finishers and four of the top five. Josh Tracy earned his first 600-meter win of the year at 1:20.57 with Chris Trotter coming in second at 1:21.00 and Collin Sieffert clocking a 1:21.37 to finish third. Clayton Johnson finished fifth for the Gophers. The 'U' also finished first and second in the 400 meters as Matthew Baker picked up his first 400 win of the season at 50.23 while Alex Kelner finished second at 50.98.

Meanwhile, John Uchytil picked up his first win of the season, leading the pole vault field at 4.65 meters (15-03.00 ft.) while Nick Rink led the 3,000 meter competition to win at 8:37.29. Declan Dahlberg finished second as an unattached competitor.

Competing unattached, Khalid Hussein bested a Minnesota-loaded one mile field with a win at 4:15.19. Robert Wagner and Connor Olson finished second and third, respectively at 4:15.19 and 4:15.48.

Additionally, Jonathan Tharaldsen finished as the runner-up in the shot put, just missing his personal record with a toss of 19.39 meters (63-07.50 ft.), James Travis finishes as the runner-up in the triple jump with an attempt of 14.36 meters (47-01.50 ft.) and Seth Eliason finishes second in his first run at 800 meters this year with a time of 1:56.11. Baker, Sieffert, Johnson and Tracy also picked up a runner-up finish in the 4x400 meter relay at 3:19.76. Dan Oyekunle finished third in the 60-meter dash finals at 7.11

The Gophers return to action next weekend with the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
